The relational family style of nurturing can be traced through the biblical models.  It should be the way the whole church relates to its children.  Throughout the history of education, a relational strand of children's instruction has paralleled the formal instruction mode. Experiments in various countries have shown that group styles of ministry are successful with children. The specific goal of the project was the creation of guidelines relating to the faith development of children from birth to confirmation.  A shared praxis model was developed, using the work of Thomas Groome, allowing the local church board of deacons and Christian education to explore their own faith development in dialogue with recent writings in sacramental theology and faith development theory.  A basic assumption explored in the project is the ability of a lay group to do significant theological reflection.  The project affirms that in a local congregation theological reflection by the laity is essential in faith development and in keeping the hope and vision of the sacraments alive. Catechetical efforts involving children (sacramental preparation meetings) serve to present parents of these children with opportunites to deepen their own experiences in religious learning.  Adults who so met to discuss past, present, and prospective experiences of religious learning became aware of the connection between their own reception of the sacraments and that anticipated by their children.  The sacraments of eucharist and reconciliation help advance adults to maturity in faith. As models for their children, adults employ formational and informational methods of catechesis.
