The stated purpose of the project proposal was: to develop a ministry to families that will facilitate storytelling by families and individual family members.  The report describes how one congregation through a ministry of listening, assisted people in rediscovering and reclaiming their stories.  Leis, the author, assumes that the church has been called by God to be a seedbed and spawning ground for stories. Preaching is defined as the proclamation of the Word of God through lecturing.  Historically, within the author's Methodist tradition, preaching has been a lecture--totally void of narrative, illustrations or even questions.  Within recent years a variety of teaching methods have been incorporated into preaching delivery but the use of these methods has seldom been questioned or even tested. It includes background information on the meaning of deafness and some of the characteristics of deaf persons and deaf society and a brief history of religious work with the deaf, particularly from the United Methodist viewpoint.  Involvement of persons in the local church, especially securing the approval of the official bodies of the church and recruitment and training of persons to work with the deaf are important. The church has sought to meet this problem with a strong storytelling approach.  The writer's thesis is that storyteller training is important for improving teacher quality.  To aid in training, the writer has developed a workshop guide through which even unskilled storytellers can help each other improve their skills, especially with use of tape recorders. Foundation studies covered the Korean church school context and the psychological, theological, and biblical backgrounds of story.
