A phenomenological framework informed by narrative inquiry methodology suggests that activism among African American females in an urban congregation is more likely to take place where the participants develop their capacity by first dealing with their own personal issues as a part of their civic skill development. The goals of this project are to (a) strengthen the purpose of the local church, the First Congregational Church of Woodbury, and (b) inspire individual and community leadership. Three faith summits and a 'faith \u0026 justice' lecture series were devised. The first summit was held in the fall of 2005, the second faith summit in the spring of 2006, and the third in the fall of 2006.  The 'faith \u0026 justice' lecture was a by-product of evaluations and learning from the three faith summits. Two committees were formed. The intra-religious committee and the inter-religious task force help steer the dialogue. Ongoing lectures and events are now combined efforts of both committees. The session members agreed upon goals for the confirmation class and learned how those goals were used to design the course.  The members were challenged to assess the confirmands' progress by viewing online reflections, meeting with the confirmands weekly, and guiding the writing of personal statements of faith in the final class.
