Creating sermon-based small groups to reinforce sermons enhances biblical discipleship and produces life change. Such groups help people grow spiritually in a complex world that communicates many ideas. Chapter one raises the possibility that resurfacing the sermon's main idea and desired application in a discussion group can extend the purpose of the sermon. Chapter two provides a theological foundation for the role of the pastor as preacher and the use of small groups. Chapter three provides analysis from ten churches interviewed to discover reasons why sermon-based small groups work, providing a best practices list, specific challenges and how to overcome them, and principles for writing curriculum. The Seven Festivals of Israel in Leviticus chapter 23, served as the catalyst for this project. Two groups of postmoderns participated in an 8-week study of the festivals. The first group learned from traditional lecture-style lessons and the second explored more kinesthetic avenues of learning the material. As the pastor of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, GA, the author was able to ask the question: can biblical expositional preaching help a multigenerational church steeped in therapeutic culture deal with contemporary issues?  A case study was produced where first the author developed a focus group to develop the contemporary issues that were important to the congregation as well as a survey to identify the top contemporary issues to be highlighted in a sermon series preached at Tabernacle Baptist Church.  After the sermon series, those who participated in the initial survey were asked to participate in a follow-up survey to see if the preaching was helpful in dealing with contemporary issues. The author preached two sermon series in 2008 which examined some of the other moral questions facing Christians, particularly in an election year.  After each sermon series, the author offered opportunities for feedback and further discussion from laity. Research from an annotated bibliography provided the resources for development of lesson plans in order to equip the selected group. The equipping included sessions that both explored and defined the concept of relationship-driven ministry. Deacons selected were asked to participate in three sessions equaling seven hours. These sessions included study of both Old and New Testament passages of Scripture supporting the concept of relationship-driven ministry. The result was the formulation of a functioning and practical team-equipping process that focused on risk management. The project began by researching risk management. Upon completion of the research phase, the project director developed a curriculum of complete lesson plans and teaching material consisting of four training sessions to equip the team on risk management. The participants were evaluated before, during and after the study.
