The primary method of study for this project was that of reflective participant-observer augmented by an extensive literature review in the areas of adult education, curriculum development, corrections, prison chaplaincy, Al-Islam Islamic education, the nation of Islam, and African-American Muslims. The reflective method of Whitehead and Whitehead in their book, 'Method in Ministry,' provides the format and structure for the work.  In the chapter dealing with tradition, the author portrays the history and development of internship among North American Lutheran theological educators.  Under culture, the theory of cognitive dissonance and a systemic method of pastoral care are related to internship supervision.  Under experience, the author probes his own history of field education supervision. The author first conducts a biblical and theoretical study of the discipling of non-literate believers in an African setting. He then conducted a survey of 314 Zairian young people as a first step toward preparing cassette istructional material. This material was used for five months by cassette monitors and then evaluated. Thirteen laypersons were trained during seven sessions in the principles of leadership, small group discipleship, group building, and the inductive Bible study method.  These principles were applied to the existing adult Bible study program.  Evaluation procedures revealed a positive move from a basic lecture style of teaching to a relational style of teaching. The assumption that underlies the project is that if teachers can experience intersection between personal story, personal experience, the biblical story, and faith community experience, to tell one will be to tell the other.  As a result, the Bible will become biographical, which makes it easier to communicate.  Teaching then will be discernibly different in the church education experience.  The project was a six-week teacher education experience for mid-high teachers that utilized denominational materials as the primary resource. The project leads students to exercise critical and controlled religious imagination. The experiential focus of the confirmation model contrasts with the more popular 'workbook' model.
