Members of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest will be surveyed through an online questionnaire and focus groups regarding their own values and practices in philanthropy and where they believe their local church should be involved in mission. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight business leaders from suburban Presbyterian churches. The findings of the study were that these business leaders are to pay careful attention to several important principles of inter-cultural leadership in collaborating for transformational development. The first conclusion regarding leadership roles was that suburban business leaders play very significant and changing roles in both inter-cultural and homogenous partnerships. The second conclusion regarding cultural intelligence was that business leaders realize the need to develop a deeper understanding of their partners from diverse cultures. The third conclusion regarding the politics of power was that business leaders have to negotiate with others from both the urban communities, as well as the centralized powers within their own suburban congregations. The mixed methods research approach was utilized, revealing realistic expectations, a stewardship plan, leadership development plan, and planter peer group all assisted a church transition. Successful churches evangelized adults aged 19-30 and had at least 100 people in attendance by year three. They recognized developed organizational systems and implemented a stewardship development plan that created a culture of giving that became apparent by year three. The survey was administered to two groups in different cities in Tanzania, Africa, and to several groups from Northplace Church in Sachse, Texas. The examination is based on four different hypotheses administered through a descriptive survey of twenty-one questions. Hypothesis 1 investigates whether participation in a short-term mission trip increases activity in missions both locally and beyond. Hypothesis 2 considers whether participation in the short-term mission trip increases ministry involvement in the church through an increased awareness of other socio-economic groups and cultures. Hypothesis 3 determines whether participation in the short-term mission trip increases ministry involvement in the church through missions giving. Finally, Hypothesis 4 studies whether participation in a short-term mission trip increases ministry involvement in the church through an increased participation in spiritual formation.This research includes a literature review with respect to the purpose of missions with a focus on the short-term mission trip experience. A booklet for individuals and a brochure for corporations were created to use as narrative tools to generate financial and material support for the organization. The story of the day shelter and the women who established and ran it was told to members of Univted Methodist Women. Olivet Baptist Church, Columbus, Ohio, explored the misunderstanding of hospitality where benevolence is seen as hospitality. Descriptive research methodology included a pre-test to assess current understanding of hospitality, cognitive interviews, questionnaires, and observation. Treatment included a sermon/workshop series re: biblical hospitality in postmodern culture. A post-test was administered which showed significant shift in the attitude of those who were in the core group.
