A definition of discipleship was developed based on Jesus' model, history and current cultural realities. Eucharistic themes and practice were explored theologically and historically with an emphasis on a Wesleyan world view. The model presented in this study is that discipleship is to be the channel through which the themes of the eucharist are introduced into a believer's life. In order to gauge whether there has been such a drift, the author of this thesis has decided to use the local church context of Memphis, TN, as a litmus test for the Western church at large, and has invited a group of churches representative of the diverse church context in Memphis to participate. The conclusion of this thesis reveals that there has indeed been a drift among many churches in Memphis from the biblical standard of discipleship. The author conducted interviews, implemented Kevin Ford's Transforming Church Index, and developed a small group Bible study exploring these principles. The results revealed the need to develop a greater awareness of evangelism and discipleship, while focusing on elements of Celtic monastic principles already in place. The church must build upon strengths shared with the Celtic monastic communities to be more effective with evangelism and discipleship. The researcher developed and taught a redemptive discipleship class as a tool for reducing legalistic tendencies. Students took a pretest and posttest survey. The pretest survey results confirmed the existence of legalistic tendencies. Given the limited time for the class the researcher decided that a reduction in legalistic tendencies of ten percent will be considered meaningful. The project contains a literature review of the biblical foundation for church membership and the historical development of church membership, followed by two case studies. Church membership in America is declining, and many church leaders wrestle with the place of membership within their own organizations. Many church leaders overlook the role that a membership process can have in the development of disciples. The case studies included in this paper are two examples of churches that seek to use their membership process to enhance discipleship. These churches have a robust process that clearly communicates the expectations of the church with systems in place for accountability and follow-up. The author examines the biblical foundation according to Matthew 29:19-20, and connects it with the Sermon on the Mount to find the way of shepherding them to become true disciples after their baptism. Based on the Sermon on the Mount, the author sets a strategy and writes a curriculum to teach new immigrants to observe the Lord's commandment and to fulfill the Great Commission. This material should meet the need of and help the growth of their Christian faith, become a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven and be the salt and the light of the world. Using a qualitative case study method, observations from the wight men were presented in a conversational sequence, and then analyzed for significant themes that were unique to the discipleship experience. The means to spiritual growth were identified, as were the hindrances to spiritual growth.
