In order to gauge whether there has been such a drift, the author of this thesis has decided to use the local church context of Memphis, TN, as a litmus test for the Western church at large, and has invited a group of churches representative of the diverse church context in Memphis to participate. The conclusion of this thesis reveals that there has indeed been a drift among many churches in Memphis from the biblical standard of discipleship. The author conducted interviews, implemented Kevin Ford's Transforming Church Index, and developed a small group Bible study exploring these principles. The results revealed the need to develop a greater awareness of evangelism and discipleship, while focusing on elements of Celtic monastic principles already in place. The church must build upon strengths shared with the Celtic monastic communities to be more effective with evangelism and discipleship. The researcher developed and taught a redemptive discipleship class as a tool for reducing legalistic tendencies. Students took a pretest and posttest survey. The pretest survey results confirmed the existence of legalistic tendencies. Given the limited time for the class the researcher decided that a reduction in legalistic tendencies of ten percent will be considered meaningful. This research evaluated their current theological and philosophical understanding and their methodological practices of disciplemaking. Qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys were utilized to evaluate their practices of disciplemaking. The development of a theological framework and the literature reviews of current disciplemaking practices led to the qualitative interview and qualitative questions. The area of discipleship used to test this means of teaching was evangelism.  Each online class session included video teaching and follow-up questions that were answered in an online forum. The outcome of the study was determined by comparing the results of each participant's pre-test and post-test. I seek to marry church planting with discipleship, making discipleship the primary focus in the church planting endeavor. The aim is to provide the church planter with an appropriate purpose for planting a church as well as with an accurate picture of what discipleship looks like in order to produce and reproduce it. This work challenges the church planter to consider 'what' to plant more so than 'how' to plant. The church planter will be armed with a process for making disciples in and through his church plant and be free of having to retrofit a process.
