To explore the role of denominations and discipleship, this thesis analyzes the relationship between traditional and contemporary forms of discipleship and denominational vitality. Specifically, it examines the role of the Advent Christian denomination in the lives of a group of worshippers at Northside Community Church. Using adult learning theory and social constructivism, this study reveals how one group of believers has constructed their organizational identities within the Advent Christian denomination and how relationships with other disciples who proclaim to follow Jesus Christ impact their system of beliefs. The initiative demonstrated significant formational impact as the various activities intersected each other. This Pentecostal church is primarily composed of immigrants mostly from Africa and the Caribbean Islands. After struggling to establish a small group ministry, the congregation and leaddership were consulted through conversations, interviews and surveys resulting in a more flexible, focused, and situation-sensitive model. The purpose of this small group ministry is to build a community of disciples nurtured by Bible study and prayer, connected with the church through their leaders, who minister to the needs of those within and beyond the group. The project contains a literature review of the biblical foundation for church membership and the historical development of church membership, followed by two case studies. Church membership in America is declining, and many church leaders wrestle with the place of membership within their own organizations. Many church leaders overlook the role that a membership process can have in the development of disciples. The case studies included in this paper are two examples of churches that seek to use their membership process to enhance discipleship. These churches have a robust process that clearly communicates the expectations of the church with systems in place for accountability and follow-up. The author examines the biblical foundation according to Matthew 29:19-20, and connects it with the Sermon on the Mount to find the way of shepherding them to become true disciples after their baptism. Based on the Sermon on the Mount, the author sets a strategy and writes a curriculum to teach new immigrants to observe the Lord's commandment and to fulfill the Great Commission. This material should meet the need of and help the growth of their Christian faith, become a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven and be the salt and the light of the world. Using a qualitative case study method, observations from the wight men were presented in a conversational sequence, and then analyzed for significant themes that were unique to the discipleship experience. The means to spiritual growth were identified, as were the hindrances to spiritual growth.
