The author first conducts a biblical and theoretical study of the discipling of non-literate believers in an African setting. He then conducted a survey of 314 Zairian young people as a first step toward preparing cassette istructional material. This material was used for five months by cassette monitors and then evaluated. These included Bible study, covenant group commitment, spiritual discipline, liturgy and ethical reflection.  These forms were focused on grace and themselves constituted means of grace.  By examining closely where they have fallen into cheap grace and where they are called to receive and embody God's costly grace, participants significantly enhanced their understanding of God's grace in their lives. Students were evaluated by empirical observation, that involved the student, a peer, and adviser, and the discipler, and reproducibility in a second small group.  The students practiced relational skills and the spiritual disciplines of: daily prayer, Bible reading, time stewardship, group accountability and journal keeping.  The discipler served as a mentor and as a model for the disciplines. Although the gospel of the kingdom contains the four dimensions of evangelism, discipleship, community, and social justice, most ministries have stressed the first two and neglected the latter two.  This study creates and teaches a four-dimensional model that is informed by Third World theological insights and the biblical theme of the kingdom.  A library survey provides the biblical, theological, and historical content of the model.  Chapter two focused on the kingdom in the modern missionary movement and the Nazareth passage (Luke 4:16-30).  The passage is used as evidence that the kingdom theme holds both spiritual and social interpretations in a kind of tension.  Chapter three studies Third World perspectives, including the challenges posed by liberation theology. Chapter four provides an overview and assessment of ministry to internationals in the USA.  It considers the four dimensions and their integration into the new model. This process focused on the call of God with the intention that at the end of the experience participants would define a specific call of God to which they could respond. This project assumed that the articulation of a call would foster discipleship growth. The process proposed did not produce the desired results. The author concluded that 'the call of God is found in the needs of humankind and is embraced in the faithful response to those needs by a group'. Synthetic Bible study is presented as the foundation, upon which a series of analytical procedures are built.  The history of interpretation is surveyed, and seven key principles of interpretation are advanced.  The role of the Holy Spirit in interpretation is discussed. Theology of any kind, which fills the ego needs of one individual or group at the expense of others will eventually make the church's life dysfunctional. Theological expression must provide positve ego fulfillment in order for the church to be what God intends.
