Foundational to an understanding of fund raising for ministry is the precept that God owns everything and people are merely stewards of what God already owns.  This idea of giving back what already belongs to God redefines the twentieth-century concept of ownership.  Christians are stewards of all God has given.  With a historical perspective on fund raising, both from the church and parachurch organizations, the project develops a practical and appropriate plan for raising money into the twenty-first century. Subsidies can, in the right circumstances, help a church to mature and take on financial responsibility for its own ministry.  This project seeks to assist the church and mission in Angola to find a balance, so that subsidies will help and not hinder the growth of the church. The project designed and implemented a teaching program, and nine adults completed the course. Participants who finished the course developed personal plans to integrate Christian faith with management of their material possessions. Conversion of the purse is most difficult for most mainline Protestants in the 1990s. This project preaches a series of seven sermons from Luke/Acts to elicit 'conversion of the purse.' The texts are Lk 4:16-30, Lk 19:1-10, Lk 11:1-4, Lk 12:13-21, Acts 4:32-5:11, Acts 19:23-41 and Lk 6:20-26, which offer a variety of literary form and content. The sermons ask: Does God side with the poor? Can a rich person be saved? When is enough enough? Does life consist in the abundance of one's possessions? Is the choice between giving and dying? Is the way we make our money as important to stewardship as the way we spend our money? Are the poor really blessed? Exegesis draws from Luke Timothy Johnson, theology from Robert Farrar Capon, Richard J. This project sought present attitudes on this problem through 213 pastor and 313 layperson questionnaires sent to churches within the Cape Cod Council, and random samples of the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ and Hyannis Federated Church.  Seminars were held for the respondents. This neglect is reflective of a certain dualism that separates the material from the spiritual, and one that pervades American culture.  This thesis argues that the dualism regarding wealth and material possessions is counter to Judeo-Christian theology.
