Ths information was gained through a written survey of those missionaries who had completed the Assemblies of God Graduate School (AGGS) pre-field training program.  The results of the survey showed a strongly favorable response to the AGGS pre-field training program, with those aspects dealing with cross-cultural communication and cultural adjustment rating the highest.  Language learning was of greatest concern. The principles of andragogy employed in a non-formal setting were found to be the most effective.  Training for cross-cultural service required a heavy emphasis on the development of interpersonal skills. The study more narrowly attempts to emphasize that churches and communities are in the midst of social (racial) and economic change and most churches facing transition wait too long to act.  The significance of cultural variety in our social system and its parallel implications speak to the ministry of the local church. The thesis/text is divided into two parts which address the sociological and theological dimensions of the church, respectively.  Part one deals with the context of the church in America, the development of denominationalism, and the church and culture in terms of the church as a product of culture.  Part two deals with the church in the New Testament, the views of Luther, Calvin and Wesley on the church, Avery Dulles' models of the church, and considers the views of Karl Barth and H Richard Niebuhr.  The thesis/text suggests that our understanding of the church is best expressed in dialectical terms.  God is the one who calls us, loves us and reaches out to us first, but there is also a human response.
