The church does not often intentionally address the cultural difficulties of obeying the command to love one’s neighbor or prioritize the unity of the church the way Jesus does. The divisions within the church reflect the rising polarity of American society along cultural and political lines rather than a beautiful contrasting vision to it that brings glory to God. \r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with nine discipleship leaders who intentionally incorporated cultural intelligence as an aspect of discipleship in their local monocultural church. The interviews focused on gaining data with four research questions: what motivates these leaders to incorporate cultural intelligence in discipleship, what challenges do they face doing it, what methods do they use, and what benefits do they find for the individual, church, and community. \r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on three key areas for incorporating cultural intelligence into discipleship: a biblical framework for cultural diversity within the church, business best practices for developing cultural intelligence, and the experience of multiethnic churches.\r\n\r\nGrowing in cultural intelligence is a process that requires people to interact with cultural difference to the point of dissonance. People resist this discomfort by retreating. Leaders play key roles by reiterating the rich gospel motivations for perseverance in the difficulties, helping people process their own emotions and resistance, and calling them to the goals of engagement with others with compassion and respect. People have embraced roles, statuses, and dispositions to fit the changing Korean culture, and in the schools, this shift has resulted in the Student Rights Ordinance. Educational administrations are providing students more liberty to become individualized and egalitarian people, and these new regulations allow students to reject teachers' orders and disciplines, the traditional understanding for sexual orientation, and rules for hairstyles, clothing, pregnancy, and religion. Due to the SRO, public demonstrations between the liberal and conservative parties have escalated.\r\n\r\n        The purpose of this study is to explore how Korean youth ministry pastors preach evangelically to care for teen congregants and their schools amid cultural pressure from the Student Rights Ordinance. This study examines Korean pastors’ sermons given to those directly affected by the ordinance. Analyzing the sermons can help Korean pastors navigate how to care for their congregants and school evangelization amid the cultural pressure of the ordinance.\r\n\r\n        This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six Korean pastors who served their congregations as part-time or full-time workers. The literature review and analysis of the six interviews focused on three key areas for sustaining a preaching ministry: the six pastors’ understandings of the Student Rights Ordinance, their preaching goals and tasks to care for the teen congregants, and sermons that share the gospel in the schools that the ordinance affects.\r\n\r\n        This study concluded that there are three necessary preaching components to care for the teen congregants and their schools in the cultural pressure of the Student Rights Ordinance: building Christian identity, obedience based on the Bible, and Christian inclusiveness of others. This study explored the pastors’ perspectives and found that they welcomed the spirit of human dignity that the ordinance describes. However, they were concerned by tendencies to support the self-absorbed exercise of rights and sexual immoralities. Although each of the pastors used different preaching styles, fitting their personal values and beliefs, all of them sought faithful transformation and obedience to God’s Word. A series of polarizing events including racial violence, police brutality, protests, riots, and a presidential election created a divided broader culture that was also experienced in the church. Pastors struggled to unite their congregations in the face of divisive rhetoric in the media and heated responses to issues dividing the culture down racial, socio-economic, and political lines. The goal of this case study was to help church members grow in their ability to communicate respectfully across cultural difference through intentional holistic discipleship\r\n\r\nThis study utilized a mixed methods approach (both qualitative and quantitative designs) using semi-structured interviews with sixteen members of one church who each experienced significant intercultural competence changes as measured by Intercultural Development Inventory®. The interviews focused on gaining data with four research questions: 1. How did participants grow in CQ® during the year? 2. How did power dynamics affect participants’ growth in CQ® during the year? 3. What discipleship practices affected participants’ growth in CQ® during the year? and 4. Suburban, homogeneous,minority-led churches are an oasis and a safe-haven for ethnic minorities who relocatefrom urban centers. Yet, as outposts of Christ’s kingdom, these churches are charged withthe responsibility of reaching across ethnic lines to make disciples of all nationsbeginning with the neighborhood in which the congregation worships. The assumptionthat leading a homogeneous congregation to diversify is the same regardless of thechurch’s location and the ethnicity of its pastor ignores the long history of race relationsin America. Minority pastors who lead suburban, ethnically homogeneous churches needkey leadership qualities to diversify their congregations.Through semi-structured interviews with nine African American pastors fromdifferent denominations and different regions of the United States, this qualitative studyconcluded that biblical conviction, cultural competence, conflict resolution skill, andemotional intelligence are key leadership qualities necessary for diversifying suburban,ethnically homogeneous, minority-led congregations.This dissertation is divided into five sections. The first section provides arationale for this study and explains the significance of the project given the novelty ofthe topic and the lack of specific research on the topic. The second section discusses therelevant literature concerning biblical conviction, cultural competence, conflict resolutionskill, and emotional intelligence. The third section describes the research procedure,offers a justification for using in-depth interviews as the preferred research method, andaddresses the limitations of the study. The fourth section of this dissertation presents theresults from the interviews which substantiate and confirm the project’s hypotheses. In the days and weeks to follow, almost every sector of life around the world was impacted as the virus became a global pandemic, and unprecedented restrictions were enacted for public safety. Businesses and schools were closed; sporting events were cancelled; gatherings were restricted; and face coverings were mandated. Overnight, churches were forced to adapt and embrace various digital media platforms to create an online presence and develop new strategies to minister to their congregations.This research project examined the implementation of a hybrid (in-person and online) church ministry model at Brookridge Baptist Church in Plover, WI using two descriptive surveys. The study sought to discover if the hybrid church model could help meet spiritual needs and facilitate personal church involvement during both a period of restricted gatherings and the ensuing phases of the COVID-19 crisis, as well as a part of the regular ministry of the church going forward.Two descriptive surveys were administered during two different points in time during the pandemic formed the basis of the research. Working in collaboration with The Board of Young Peoples Ministry and the Hispanic /Latino Ministry of the Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church, the retreat model was reviewed by the committees for use in the work of spiritual formation for Black and Latinx Young Adults. This research portfolio seeks to answer the question: Will prayer encounters with God through the practice of praying with the Scriptures facilitate the participants’ capacities to hear God and increase awareness of His presence? The context for the research portfolio is seminary students and a small group of participants from the Iglesia Evangelica China De Panama from the Chinese diaspora in Panama, Central America.This portfolio offers my spiritual autobiography (Chapter II), which traces the influences of three different Christian spiritual traditions (Foster 1998) and my professional training in various fields that have helped me hear God and experience God’s presence in my daily life. A four-year academic model and curriculum (Chapter III) is created from the experience of my spiritual formation and implemented for the Alliance Bible School of Central and South America. Finally, a field research project (Chapter IV) is offered to examine the effectiveness of Lectio Divina to facilitate prayer encounters in a small group of students from the Iglesia Evangelica China De Panama. The results show positive responses by the participants in their ability to hear God and experience his presence.
