This thesis challenges dominant narratives that assume that queer folk either abandon religion or escape to urban centers. Drawing heavily from qualitative data obtained from surveying and interviewing 12 queer Christians with lived experience within rural contexts, this study reveals how faith is sustained, reimagined, and reinterpreted despite exclusion, spiritual trauma, and in many cases limited access to affirming communities. Integrating queer and liberation theology as well as sociological analysis of rural religious and social contexts, this project emphasizes lived experience as a source of theological wisdom. The respondents speak to enduring relationships with God, separating divine constancy with failure of the religious institution, and engaging in reinterpretations through a queer lens that is rooted in love, justice, grace, and Jesus’ message.\r\n\r\nThe findings shine a light on how rural dynamics, especially the heightened visibility, social policing, and the centralized role of the church as a community institution, increase both the risks of exclusion but also speak to the transformative power of affirmation. Even with varying relationships to organized religion, all respondents shared a sustained faith commitment and a desire to ethically engage scripture, which is shaped by resilience and a deep hope for transformation among the church. To be known requires respect and understanding of their communities’ pastoral needs and religious practices.  Sadly, many leaders have a colonial mentality that foments stereotypes and even prejudice toward Hispanics. The only way to move beyond this mentality is to sincerely enter into relationships with Latino(a)s, and understand how they see themselves.  This respectful understanding must begin with our Church leaders. Latino/as want to share their cultural and religious practices that connect them to their families and ancestors. Although the Hispanic Catholics play a vital role in the life of the Church, barriers to inclusion remain. Hispanic Catholics want to fully participate in the Church’s mission to serve the whole community.  They are eager to share their gifts through collaborative service in their parishes.\r\n\r\nIn this thesis project I reveal Hispanic communities that are already present but not often seen. I introduce their religious practices to the larger community including church leaders. I focus on the religious practice called Adoración Nocturna Mexicana (Mexican Nocturnal Adoration). A practice where members of the Mexican Catholic communities spend the night in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar where, like all Catholics, they worship the true presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated hosts reposited in the Tabernacle and exposed in the monstrance on the altar during nocturnal adoration vigil. The study shows how Hispanics have historically and are presently practicing nocturnal adoration as part of their popular religious practices.  More importantly, I explore what drives them toward these religious practices. By listening to their stories, I have heard their heartfelt voices as they express their needs and desires, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I also demonstrate how they emulate the Samaritan woman at the well (John: 4-42), and like her are moved to evangelization when they also come to the realization of being known and therefore loved by Christ. \r\n\r\nI delve into the pastoral, social, and theological dimensions of Hispanic popular Catholicism and devotional practices, referred to as Santo praxis and lo cotidiano (the everyday).  \r\n\r\nThe goal is to demonstrate how popular religious devotion is forged in the historical struggles of people who are oppressed. They assent to the authority of scripture, but they have also been impacted by the undercurrents of the postmodern culture. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact a postmodern worldview (social imaginary) has on the engagement of Christian college Student Affairs/Student Development personnel with their Gen Z students, and in particular, their engagement with their students’ hearts, minds, and practices. Utilizing the book of Proverbs (representing biblical wisdom concerning young people’s hearts, minds, and practices) and the “three great untruths” of Lukianoff and Haidt found in The Coddling of the American Mind (representing postmodern “wisdom”), this study sought to gain insight into which type of wisdom was being described when Christian college Student Development personnel talked about developing the hearts, minds, and practices of their students.\r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight Christian College Student Development personnel from a singular CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) institution in the Midwest. Interviews were conducted with Student Development professionals from a variety of offices within the Student Development division of that institution. The interviews were analyzed and compared in order to identify worldview categories and themes.\r\n\r\nThe introduction and literature review focused on four key areas regarding the impact of postmodernism on the engagement of Christian College Student Development personnel with the hearts, minds, and practices of their Gen Z students: the roots and impact of modernism and postmodernism on contemporary American higher education (in the introduction); the good, true, and beautiful life according to the proverbs of Solomon; the good, true, and beautiful life according to the modern social imaginary; and the good, true, and beautiful life according to the postmodern social imaginary.\r\n\r\nThe resulting analysis revealed these primary findings. First, CCSDP answered questions about living truthfully, flourishing, and doing good in the world in ways most aligned with the wisdom of Proverbs. Second, there was also significant alignment in their answers with modern and postmodern social imaginaries. It explores contemporary Christian scholarship regarding the Bible and women, children, and those living with physical or emotional disabilities and argues that patriarchy and ableism—in scripture and tradition—have long silenced marginal voices. Using examples from her own creative work, the author maintains that literary fiction can be a powerful tool to give voice to—and inspire—those who have historically been marginalized and ignored. It is written because in a time where the Church in the West is in decline, it seems most necessary to deepen the understanding with regards to theological challenges that come with the missiological context of the secular West. The methodology is based upon descriptive research, which was guided by a main research question. The answering of the main question was done through answering four subquestions, and those four answers were key to most of the main content in the thesis. The first chapter starts with an introduction that describes the methodology, which is followed by a review of literature. Chapter two is about the characterization of a reformational theology of ministry, which is presented with the three principles of Gospel, Culture, and Movement. Chapter three then deals with the characterization of the secular West, in which it is first about the distinctiveness of the West and then about the concepts of postmodernity and post-Christian as essential insights into secularism. After that comes chapter four that has the focus on the characterization of the missional Church, which is described though an exploration of the missiological foundational elements of discipleship and faithful presence. The fifth chapter starts with summarizing the findings, followed by describing the characterization of the missional Church in the secular West, which is done by elaboration on six basic elements. These six basic elements are: Christian high theory, post-Christendom evangelistic dynamic, category defying social vision, counter-catechesis for a digital age, faithful presence in public spheres, and grace to the point. This fifth chapter ends with the conclusion that he secular West needs a healthy missional Church, which implies a reformational theology of ministry that is fruitful through proper incorporation of the three principles of Gospel, Culture, and Movement. And part of that conclusion is also that in order for the (missional) Church to be healthy it needs to embrace discipleship and faithful presence at the core of its (missiological) teaching. It is a conclusion that can also be understood with the two foundational commissions in the Bible: Genesis 1:26 and Matthew 28:18-20. Despite affirming youth leadership, leaders have more often commodified children, teens, or young adult ministries rather than developing age-appropriate resources to support Gen Z and Alpha’s interest in spirituality. Age-segregation in U.S. Christian ministry contexts has limited teen’s participation in intergenerational conversations about encountering God, navigating cultural pluralism, and Christian spiritual formation. An over-emphasis on performance and hurry within U.S. evangelical and charismatic ministries has limited teens’ discernment, experiential understanding of God’s character, and ability to build healthy rhythms for life and ministry. Without sufficient modeling, support, and protection, teens have lacked opportunities to experience spirituality, form identities based on their experiences, and steward their unique gifts within community. Synthesizing the strengths of Spiritual Direction and Prophetic ministry may best equip teens to enter into the “search-encounter-transformation” process that has come to characterize contemporary Renewalist spirituality.\r\n\r\nUltimately, Latino/a/x approaches to community may inform more grounded spiritual practices in renewalist youth ministry contexts like Mosaic Church in Seattle, Washington. During a time of increasing U.S. social transformation and latinization, U.S. Latino/a/x communities’ approaches to belonging and social difference (mestizaje), shared testimony (testimonios), family (familismo), solidarity (solidaridad), life in community (en convivencia), and encountering God in everyday life (lo cotidiano) may support U.S. youth ministries to navigate change. Specifically, Latino/a/x Pentecostal patterns of utilizing testimony as a conduit for shared spiritual direction may influence renewalist ministry contexts like Mosaic Youth Ministry to develop a deeper sense of shared identity. Ultimately, my act of ministry project explored whether using Harvard Project Zero thinking routines in small group discussion could support a focus group of Mosaic teens to engage with elders’ testimonies latinamente. \r\n\r\nFor my act of ministry, I interviewed 4 Mosaic Church adults (18+) about an experience they had with God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. From the interviews, I rewrote 3 case studies to share with Mosaic teens. Next, I designed a pre-test and post-test to measure teens’ vocabulary and background knowledge. I designed discussion questions based on Bloom’s taxonomy, teen’s lexile levels, Harvard Project Zero’s Connect, Extend, Challenge, Creative Questions, and Think, Puzzle, Explore thinking routines. I met with 6 middle and high school students (12-18) who had differing amounts of experience with spiritual encounter to discuss these encounter narratives over 5 weeks in Fall 2023. At the end, teens reflected on what they had received from the project and their remaining questions.\r\n\r\nThe results of this research demonstrate that responding to case studies within small group contexts can be an effective way to support teen’s vocabulary development about spirituality. Responding to case studies may support teens to generate questions about their own spirituality, identify their own interests, and connect with others. The assumption of this study was that pastors and congregants in rural ministry need to engage their communities with the gospel. This requires the use of the theology of mission. It was assumed that missional theology would prove to be a helpful tool in aiding pastors and congregants in rural ministry contexts to engage their communities redemptively. \r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structed interviews with four pastors who have experience in rural ministry. The interviews revealed seven challenges common to rural ministry: limited resources, lack of pastoral leadership, oversaturation of churches, congregations struggle when the community struggles, defining the role of the congregation in the community, confusion over theological language, and defining the role of the congregation members in evangelism and outreach.\r\n\r\nThe literature review and analysis of the four interviews focused on how the theology of mission can help inform and equip pastors of rural congregations to engage their communities with the gospel.\r\n\r\nThis study concluded that rural pastors often feel isolated and ignored. It also concluded that rural ministry is an area that needs attention from the wider church. Rural ministry is often over-looked, and this results in large areas of the United States being unreached by the gospel. If the church wants to remain faithful to the commands of Jesus Christ, the church must go intentionally to rural, suburban, and urban contexts to make disciples. The church does not often intentionally address the cultural difficulties of obeying the command to love one’s neighbor or prioritize the unity of the church the way Jesus does. The divisions within the church reflect the rising polarity of American society along cultural and political lines rather than a beautiful contrasting vision to it that brings glory to God. \r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with nine discipleship leaders who intentionally incorporated cultural intelligence as an aspect of discipleship in their local monocultural church. The interviews focused on gaining data with four research questions: what motivates these leaders to incorporate cultural intelligence in discipleship, what challenges do they face doing it, what methods do they use, and what benefits do they find for the individual, church, and community. \r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on three key areas for incorporating cultural intelligence into discipleship: a biblical framework for cultural diversity within the church, business best practices for developing cultural intelligence, and the experience of multiethnic churches.\r\n\r\nGrowing in cultural intelligence is a process that requires people to interact with cultural difference to the point of dissonance. People resist this discomfort by retreating. Leaders play key roles by reiterating the rich gospel motivations for perseverance in the difficulties, helping people process their own emotions and resistance, and calling them to the goals of engagement with others with compassion and respect.
