In this context, resurrection and the providence of God are addressed through a series of select questions and answers posed by the Heidelberg Catechism. Subjects such as the beginning of the universe, divine governance, original sin, resurrection and new creation are held in juxtaposition with scientific theories of Big Bang cosmology, thermodynamics, death of the universe, and evolution. Leviticus","Sermons"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to explore how Reformed pastors can apply hermeneutical principles to preach through challenging texts with gospel application, and will use a ritual text from Leviticus as its model. This study utilized a qualitative design blended with the execution of a literary dissertation to gather extensive literature review from resources related to hermeneutics; to Ancient Near Eastern ritual and ritual practice in general; and to homiletical principles for Christocentric preaching. The literature review focused on gaining data with three research questions: What are best practices in navigating hermeneutical challenges in interpreting Leviticus? What are best practices in determining meaning in the ritual texts of Leviticus? What methods can be helpful to seeing the work of Christ in the Old Testament and specifically in Leviticus? \r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on three key areas to understand in preparing for and preaching a text of scripture: the hermeneutical principles wisely applied to the study and preaching of any biblical text; the methods and mindset most helpful to the examination of a ritual text (for this study); and the theology and strategies conducive to Christocentric preaching from any text in scripture. Three areas of literature review were approved in order to make this a literary dissertation rather than a standard qualitative dissertation (one area). This thesis contends that James and Jude built their ethical appeals on an assumed, apostolic theology generated by the resurrection, which included a high Christology and an expectant eschatology. As the watershed, foundational event in the early church, the resurrection prompted massive and widespread shifts in the apostles’ Christological comprehension, ethical construction, and exegetical methods. Rather than leaving James and Jude in the unintelligible backwaters of the NT, this thesis shows that these brothers of Jesus were not only aligned with the apostolic theology behind all of the NT documents but were also influential in its formation and application. The resurrection is the foundational doctrine of our faith, and yet many pastors struggle with imparting his or her belief. A pastor's beliefs surrounding the resurrection may be at odds with the primary belief systems of the people in the pews. Or perhaps a pastor does not know what he or she believes. A vacuum is formed that gets filled with popular theology from books promoting a dispensational worldview, television or movies. Sermons often promote the notion of heaven without confronting what we really mean when we say, 'I believe in the resurrection of the body.'The study presents the point of view that our understanding of resurrection can be opened up through attending to the gap between belief and practice. In other words, what does it mean in our lives today when we say we are a people of the resurrection? Can we think of ourselves as rehearsing resurrection right now? Toward that end a curriculum was developed for an adult study on resurrection, based on the shared praxis model of Thomas Groome.The curriculum was found to be a tiny, first step in a re-shaping of the way a congregation apprehends the resurrection. Protestant pastors seemingly have neither given attention to nor engaged in theological discussion concerning what impact such radically differing images may have.Research was conducted using a literature survey along with a survey of commercially available images of Jesus. An over-arching historical survey was provided of how art and theology influenced each other beginning with Old Testament prohibitions against the fabrication of images to the wealth of Jesus images available in 2010. Based on the research it was concluded that the image of Jesus and how he is portrayed does have an impact on how an individual understands the person and work of Jesus.A paradigm was developed that enables a pastor to analyze popular visual images of Jesus circulating in the United States and to analyze their theological significance so that they can be more intentional about their own use of images of Jesus and more aware of the ways an individual's Christology may be influenced by the broader visual cultural environment. Drawing upon the Psychology of Meaning and the Prologue to the Fourth Gospel, this thesis project developed and tested a preaching methodology to respond to the significant increase in anxiety in the Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey, by addressing the sense of meaninglessness that often causes or aggravates anxiety. Chapter 1 presents the project’s genesis, its ministerial context, and the magnitude of the problem it seeks to address. An interdisciplinary framework built upon the Psychology of Meaning and Dr. Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy in Chapter 2 lays the groundwork for the highly sacramental christology of meaning rooted in Jesus Christ as Logos that emerges as the project’s theological framework in Chapter 3. These concepts find natural allies in the dialectical and sacramental theological imaginations and the undeniably Scriptural genre of testimony, the project’s homiletic foundations presented in Chapter 4. A preached retreat, held on November 13, 2021, served as the project’s ministerial intervention and tested its hypothesis before twenty-one adults living in the Diocese of Metuchen who experience anxiety. Chapter 5 discusses the retreat in detail and the qualitative and quantitative data obtained through the insider, outsider, researcher multiple data-collection technique used in the intervention. These data, discussed in Chapter 6, support the hypothesis that preaching meaning in Jesus Christ, the Logos, offers a pastoral response to the significant increase in anxiety by countering the sense of meaninglessness often associated with this condition. Though many theologians have addressed this question throughout history, there remains a greater need to engage this question from the standpoint of the Bread of Life Discourse. With the intention of answering this question solely through Scriptural exegesis, the author chose to conduct an exegetical study of the Discourse as it is recorded in John 6:22-59. After examining the structure and historical context of the passage, she deemed it necessary to address whether the Discourse and the sacrament were related, and if so, the nature of that relationship. Through linguistic, structural, and historical considerations of John 6:22-59, she concluded that the passage at hand is indirectly related to the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. The Discourse and sacrament share key Christological teachings. The scope of this project yielded a list of the various gifts Christ gives to the one who “comes and believes,” or “partakes” of him, as well as a description of each. This study is a valuable resource for the Church as it provides a deeper understanding of the spiritual realities surrounding the Lord’s Supper. This proposal advocates that recovery of ontological truths on the grounds of the interrelationship and interaction of Trinity. The recovery of apostolicity as an ontological attribute of Godhead provides significant insight and cohesion to the ontological Trinitarian proposal.The significance of how God produces existentially and ontologically His life within the believer will define humanity in being, through relationship to Godhead. Religious practices both biblical and extra-biblical are examined and considered to better understand the extent of the paradigmatic shift that occurs in the person of Jesus Christ. This proposal develops a fuller understanding of the composition of a human being in the image of God in ontological terms in contrast to the orthodoxy’s dichotomist, trichotomist assertions. The perspective of states in which a human being exists, culminate in the identification of the ‘πνευματικός’ believer as the sole form of legitimate existence that is biblically normalized and warranted.The ontological significance will also redefine church according to the nature and Person of Godhead, thereby widely reforming structures and functions according to ontological truths and practices. This argumentation has reconnected Church to the Trinity ontologically and demonstrated that Church utterly depends upon Trinitarian substance and operation to exist according to divine intentions.Emerging from this exegesis is a model of church: ontological and apostolic, originated, [re]sourced, and incarnate from the nature of Trinity, demonstrating undeniably that it is impossible for the Church of divine intent to exist outside of the three persons of the Godhead, she has no life of her own.
