Chapters include the justification for the church's participation in the program, the actual planning and implementation of the volunteer staff, and final evaluations of the effort. Although studies show that US girls are not more sexually active than girls from other nations, the American teenagers are more likely to become pregnant.  This paper explores the sociological, psychological and theological reasons for this phenomena.  It then proposes a client-centered Rogerian approach for counseling these teenagers.  This approach appears to lead girls to make healthier choices for themselves.  The thesis is based on the work of one counselor in the county adolescent clinics of Indianapolis, Indiana. One specific way of congregational response is then selected. In a previous analysis of the congregation, we learned that our congregation was located in the area of Arlington which has the highest number of social problems.  We also learned that responding to human problems came out last on the scale of importance in our church life as it was perceived by our members. These adult-children of alcoholics have been left with psychological and physical scars.  This project draws on research in the field of alcoholism and adult-children and on personal experience. It seeks to define who the adult-child is; the dynamic and the effects of the alcoholic and the co-dependent spouse on the child; the myths, messages, rules and roles within the alcohlic family.  The latter part of the work presents the church as family.  It profiles the alcoholic priest who is an adult-child, the church's response to alcoholic clergy, the role of church authority and denial. It relates its findings to a church which exists in an individualistic society, but which is committed ethically to becoming more community oriented.  The project describes five phases of development: 1) the establishment of a congregational unemployment task force; 2) the involvement of the Butler Unemployment Task Force (BUTF); 3) the incorporation of human resource agencies; 4) action taken by the BUTF on behalf of unemployed and underemployed; 5) the incorporation of the wider church. In a cooperative effort, the Hall County Department of Family and Children's Services join with lay volunteers who are placed in direct service to parents who physically abuse their children.  Volunteers develop trust relationships to renew self esteem, decrease social isolation and enhance capacity for coping with stress.
