To uncover these factors twenty-eight 'main-line' Protestant church members were interviewed, each having been a member of a rural or small town church at the time of divorce.  The interviews revealed specific factors that caused some divorcing people to leave the church and other factors that enabled some to remain active. This study examines the thesis that a theology of the cross, issuing in realistic, non-violent strategies, provides the most appropriate basis for a ministry committed to peacemaking.  Critical factors that need to inform and guide the theology and praxis of any peacemaking ministry are considered.  The thesis is tested in dialogue with significant sources, with persons exposed to the project, and through use of a questionnaire-survey instrument. The author led fifteen persons in six seminars concerning hungry children in underdeveloped countries, justice and the world food crisis, peace and justice, systematic injustice and institutional violence, the impact of international banks and multinational corporations in the Third World, and the Christian's response to global hunger.  Two instruments measured the project's effectiveness: (1) the participants' assessment which indicated enthusiastic interest, and (2) the author's estimate of each person's involvement within the seminars. The congregations are described as liberal, conservative, fundamentalist protestant, and catholic.  The questionnaire revealed that these Christians are not as involved in sports as the general public. It proposes that the experience is linked to an anomic crisis in the US social construction of reality.  It contends that the ecclesial region is called to transfer allegiance from central power structures to forces struggling to construct a just, participatory and sustainable society. Friendships were pursued first among church members and then among those outside of the church from community and business contacts.  Ten class sessions were conducted which were comprised of lectures, discussions, role-play and outside of class assignments. Two lecturers from the community shared insights on making friends and how to overcome barriers.
