Powerful sociological, economic, cultural, technological and historical factors all shape and influence the ministry of the church. At the same time, the church 'in' the world is also the church not 'of' the world. Neither sectarian retreat nor a wholesale sellout of the church's otherworldy agenda of ministry to accommodate the world are viable options. Instead a new vision and understanding of what it means to be 'in' not 'of' is desperately neded by both the church and the world. The purpose of this study is to describe the ethos and worldview of a typical mainstream baby boomer congregation and to offer an alternate response to the American context. The author presents the biblical rationale and theological underpinnings to support his notion of the public community of faith that exists 'in' the world for the sake 'of' the world. It is obvious that Christian thinking is a rare commodity, much less a Christian view of culture with emphasizing a ministry that adequately addresses the trends of our day."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716050701385728,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:56:14.378Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:13:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:17:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"15f92cd7-f35a-4cb9-98c4-cd8dd4cb98c3","accessControl_ssim":["6d99578c-70fb-4e66-a71a-cdcd3e6dc501"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Contexualization in theology and ministry in northern Virginia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:13:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:46:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["38c256df-34f8-4cda-adfa-845cd54dccff"],"hasLease_ssim":["d4e0be48-495d-4114-b72f-a2620a998444"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["James A Scherer"],"year_tesim":["1990"],"location_tesim":["Virginia"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ross H Trower"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Theology, Contextual","Church and the world"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In northern Virginia today, affluence, success, transiency, education, growth, and individuation are prominent characteristics of the social and cultural context. It is a concern that many churches have not come to terms with. In Australia unemployment was a major concern in the early part of the 1980's. This study looks at one major industrial city, namely, Wollongong in N.S.W. and considers the responsibility of the church to do ministry with the unemployed. It raises the preliminary issues of consciousness raising within the church on the issues of unemployment. It looks at economic, sociological, and theological aspects of unemployment and then proceeds to use the process of structural analysis as a tool in a workshop situation. The process of doing theology receives considerable attention because it represents a biblical and theological framework for shaping ministry with the unemployed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716943324774400,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:10:25.650Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:18:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:44:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"536230b7-eb1b-4a68-aadd-6be3fece870f","accessControl_ssim":["92b904b0-bd86-42fe-8794-98731e3a3fb1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Relating the 'two-thirds world' to a 'first world' congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:18:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:34:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9cb68cec-f7a4-4534-bbcb-85499b14090f"],"hasLease_ssim":["a1c53ccb-fba8-4c4e-802e-18b6ce6869d5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Keith Watkins"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Raymond A Cuthbert"],"publisher_tesim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["International relations","Ecology","Lord's Supper","Power (Christian theology)","Church and the world","Bible.
