The heart of the project blends a number of research tools, including demographic research of the city of Campo Bom coupled with survey research and statistical analysis by means of questionnaires, interviews and participant observation with the goal of planting a church in the targeted community. A spiritual theology was developed based upon an interpretation of Matthew 5-7 through a theological framework of Christian spiritual formation.  A literature review demonstrates the uniqueness of Christian spirituality, specifically in prayer, within contemporary western culture.  Second, survey research was conducted to determine current formation realities.  The spiritual theology and survey data were synthesized to design a comprehensive pathway for congregational spiritual formation. The project director designed this project utilizing the Strategy Planning model. The project began with the director researching a variety of disciple making methodologies. Secondly, the project director enlisted a select group of pastors, churches and convention staff, and associational workers to serve on a strategic task force. Thirdly, the director and task force developed a strategy for disciple making in an African American community church plant. These models could be useful in energizing existing churches to participate in planting new churches. Limiting the focus to post 1979 starts, research was a combination of historical, quantitative and qualitative reviews augmented through interviews with pastors and laity possessing specific knowledge of individual church stories. Two potential models were examined: Elijah (2 Kings 2) for closing/merging and Antioch (Acts 13:1-4) for sending out.
