Surveys, questionnaires, and reporting forms were used to draw conclusions in both the church and the community. Supervised subgroups of the congregation met in homes, called 'homegroups.'  The homegroup leaders went through leadership training touching on areas such as theology for homegroups, biblical fellowship, crowd breakers, church outreach, sharing your testimony, servanthood, biblical caring, and prayer in small groups.  Another subgroup called marriage-obics was instituted for young marrieds first, and then opened to all who were married.  The strength of this ministry was in its practicality and spontaneity.  Measurement of success was made by written evaluation of the participants. The project takes seriously the pastoral aspect  of preaching within the church and uses this general pastoral approach to preaching.  It examines the process by which the listener is involved in the preparation phase of preaching and how the relationships with the preacher, with other group members, and with the preaching material can make a difference in the impact of the sermon on the hearer.  The project was conducted over a six-week period of time.  A small group of nine laity were recruited from a suburban United Methodist Church in Rowlett, Texas.  This small group met with the pastor weekly to consider the sermon text for the Sunday morning worship.  Three sermons were preached from narrative texts in the book of Genesis. Although the main goal of the group was to explore the biblical text, special care was taken to make sure that relationships were developed in the small group experience for each participant. A brief liturgy of support for grieving families was also developed. The study demonstrates that a small group of people, with an intentional agenda of spirituality and stewardship, can come to grips with its own attitudes toward stewardship and become a cohesive, intentional cadre of people within a local congregation.  Stewardship is understood as a cosmic orientation with God as the householder, Christ as the chief steward, and humanity as the stewards of the cosmos. The project dealt with small group life as a microcosm of the growth in understanding this concept of stewardship in the
