Experimental and descriptive research methodologies were used with control and experimental groups.  A questionnaire determined spiritual disciplines that needed improvement, and a training manual was developed based upon the results. The experimental group received seven weeks of discipleship training from the project director.  This group then trained others one-on-one using the same material. The Youth Corps (Toronto, Canada) experience was chosen as an existing operational vehicle for the research. As a qualitative study, the bias was lessened by asking predetermined questions to former team members of Youth Corps.  The results demonstrated that the team model is an effective approach to ministry.  It challenges people to work within a meaningful vision, to respond to action, and to an awareness of every person's leadership role. The theological rationale is based on the three-dimensional definition of koinonia by Joseph Henry Thayer.  The theoretical section provides a definition of koinonia and establishes criteria for the formation of koinonia groups. Historic and contemporary examples of small groups are then examined and evaluated using Thayer's definition of koinonia.
