Two sample small groups were used for the ten-week project: a pilot group and a parallel group.  The pilot group consisted of seven members who were secured through private invitation. The parallel group's involvement was limited to taking the same pretest and posttest as the pilot group. Some of those who left the church for other churches were interviewed, as were the backsliders and regular attenders. The results indicated that something was lacking in the church. The senior pastor chose a team of five laypersons to help design an eight-week course based around a manual/workbook. Included is a theological study based on the biblical model of shepherding.  It also contains the social change theory needed to assist the congregants to accept a lay-pastoral care paradigm. The primary strategy for accomplishing the project's purpose was to develop a structure for equipping leaders to conduct and expand small home Bible study groups at Emmanuel Baptist Church.  Once the new groups were launched, the author supervised or coached the group leaders and co-leaders as they led three home Bible study groups.  This strategy has provided the structure by which these Bible studies will have a multiplying effect throughout the congregation as new groups are formed. Five groups met for one-and-one-half hours, once per week for ten weeks.  Four of these used a curriculum consisting of personal faith-sharing, instructional materials, hands-on activities, and prayer.  A placebo group studied the Bible.  A control sample consisted of another thirty congregational members.  A questionnaire was the basis of evaulation.  Results indicated that faith-sharing produced the most movement.  New groups exhibited a higher degree of movement than existin groups. Through using team-building techniques the writer sought to improve the effectiveness of the group by reducing conflict and building cohesive relationships within the church's pastoral staff.  The project required ten seminar sessions and a two-session workshop to complete the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.  The major components of the project were: goal setting, communication, conflict management, personality type, and spiritual gifts.  The ministers improved  their effectiveness as a ministering team as a result of the
