An experientially oriented four-session course was developed for 42 ninth-grade confirmands and their parents. Five instructors were trained as small group leaders. A pre-test and post-test was administered to the confirmands and parents, and a follow-up interview was conducted by the two pastors. Conclusions are: 1) Careful attention to educational theory and practice pays dividends; 2) Work with the group leaders was necessary to the success of the program; 3) The evaluative tools provided a focus for the entire study by keeping the work on target; 4) The intergenerational scope of the project was vital to the confirmands' and parents' learning and to the enrichment of their understanding of ministry; 5) A new understanding of 'the priesthood of all believers' enhanced appreciation of their own Christian ministries."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719955121307648,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:58:17.923Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:26:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:32:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9b1cda41-cd48-4fa5-8e2a-d4dca844d644","accessControl_ssim":["6445d1b6-5a36-4a94-b950-0797ef415414"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A parish experience with family cluster"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:26:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:40:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["51ffd434-4240-4772-bc25-7e8e6af7abf3"],"hasLease_ssim":["b4743699-7d66-44d8-bb1a-4aa89039b20c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Boston University"],"advisor_tesim":["Merle R Jordan"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Frank Jones Richardson"],"publisher_tesim":["Boston University School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Sawin, Margaret M","Trinity United Methodist Church (East Lansdowne, Pa)","Families--Religious life","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Based on Margaret Sawin's concept of religious education, this seven-week church program gathered together 23 people of all ages for the purpose of learning about themselves, their families, one another and about God. Immediate antecedents were the Anglican religious societies formed during the evangelical revival in England, the Holy Club experience of John Wesley and others in Oxford, and the bands into which Moravians divided their communities. Each is analyzed. The class meeting emerged from the evangelistic organizational activity of Methodists. There is particular reference to the influence of Wesley's main doctrines of repentance, faith and sanctification. Class meetings are compared to the religious societies, the Holy Club, and the Moravian bands, indicating both uniqueness and indebtedness to what was occurring elsewhere. Small group work in the church is effective when it is informed by theology; small groups involve laity in ministry; evangelism is a life-long process in which small groups are important are the conclusions of the study."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127252206878720,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:40:57.845Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:22:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:49:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b3cbaca0-e2b7-4349-9f0d-6ce2c5a4290b","accessControl_ssim":["2d166b28-49eb-433d-9159-64ddb45a5c86"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Potential for the parish: the ministry of the Christian community in the nurturing of persons"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:22:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:19:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dc035db4-e6a1-4c90-8856-0a33659ca92d"],"hasLease_ssim":["44625579-8f1a-45b5-9c95-18feea38d476"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Willis Elliott"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert Waldo Jewett"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Community--Religious aspects","Church group work","Humanistic psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The potential for nurturing persons in Christian community through the small group modality is explored. If insights from the 'human potential movement' are to be implemented in the church's nurturing ministry compatability with theological affirmations and nurturing philosophy needs to be evaluated in addition to the methodology of the modality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719397631197184,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:49:26.259Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:19:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:39:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a7eaf9b7-3846-4d31-9dda-3b86fcc40899","accessControl_ssim":["f414803d-89b6-42d8-8eca-67aba734e7d2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The disciplined small group in the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:19:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:59:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6ce6b738-8839-4934-a78a-ef212042de3b"],"hasLease_ssim":["ceeab0e5-891d-4b52-818e-20bd6d188c7c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["L Howard Grimes"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charles William Cook"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Wesley, John, 1703-1791","Theology","Church renewal--Methodist Church","Pastoral theology","Asbury United Methodist Church (Denton, Tex)","Bible--Study","Church group work","Methodist class meetings"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The study determines whether two small group models, a Covenant Bible Study and the John Wesley Great Experiment, could lead to renewal in a local congregation. The conclusions were: 1) The small group model was ineffective for church renewal but very effective in pastoral care; 2) The image of the pastor as chief teacher was reinforced; 3) The local church can allocate only a portion of its time and energy to small groups without seriously neglecting other important ministries; and 4) The local church needs more help in understanding the dynamics of human relationships."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127132485713920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:39:03.670Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:18:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:50:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4b3a0d9f-4933-4be9-a1f4-885ea0c6a382","accessControl_ssim":["ef1612d8-0ef2-4e08-99ca-c99d5ed8b9c8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Multiple staff ministry in the United Church of Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:18:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:35Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0c86135b-b949-4591-b782-df0e7b07f246"],"hasLease_ssim":["d3aa98b9-0c7e-4cca-8abc-b30d89ed9a3e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Lyman Farrar"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The student worked in an inner-city church for two years during which three faith-sharing groups were established. Through repeated development of such groups, this method proved to be very effective in communicating the essentials of the gospel. Such a method of outreach must be conducted by a local congregation whose priority to evangelism is motivated by the evangel itself.
