The participatory group and the control group answered a specially prepared inventory, the Small Group Evangelism Scale, before and after the training class.  The results of the class based on the scale indicated that the class was viable. What is essentially lacking is an appreciation for encountering God in religious experience.  This project examines the importance of primary knowledge of God through mystical religious experience.  Chapter 1 addresses the theological basis for encountering God within the context of Jungian psychology, William James and the Western Christian tradition.  Ultimately a theology of the Christian mystical experience of union with God is framed within the Reformed positions of John Calvin and Karl Barth.  The minister's role as a spiritual director is examined in chapter 2. Group experiences are suggested as an alternative or prelude to the one-on-one relationship.  Selection of a curriculum and lesson plans for a spiritual encounter group are submitted in chapter 3. The story of the formation of a spiritual encounter group is told in chapter 4. The project provided a formal structure for mutual sharing between clergy and laity, with the intent of meeting felt needs within the congregation.  The methodology involved a survey of the congregation to surface needs, the training of a group of people to give feedback to the preacher, and discussion to prepare sermons and to evaluate their effectiveness. The method tested was one developed by Paul Scott Wilson in his Imagination of the Heart.  For the practicum two groups of lay people were recruited: one was to help the pastor develop three sermons and the other to evaluate them.  The practicum discovered that Wilson's method is effective but is too involved to be used by most laity in a sermon preparation group. The project utilized small groups of people which met in homes.  The group met together for one hour and included time for Bible study, sharing prayer concerns and group prayer.
