The study demonstrates that a small group of people, with an intentional agenda of spirituality and stewardship, can come to grips with its own attitudes toward stewardship and become a cohesive, intentional cadre of people within a local congregation.  Stewardship is understood as a cosmic orientation with God as the householder, Christ as the chief steward, and humanity as the stewards of the cosmos. Thirteen laypersons were trained during seven sessions in the principles of leadership, small group discipleship, group building, and the inductive Bible study method.  These principles were applied to the existing adult Bible study program.  Evaluation procedures revealed a positive move from a basic lecture style of teaching to a relational style of teaching. Secondly, it attempts to build a practical theology where belief and practice are mutually independent. Lectio divina in its classic medieval, monastic form consisted of reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation of the Scriptures. This classic approach, with the additional elements of journal keeping, the use of the Jesus Prayer, and the Jungian concept of 'active imagination' was taught to a group of six lay Episcopalians over a six-week period. Five small groups participated in a ten-month program of spiritual formation using John Wesley's 'band' model.  A questionnaire was administered to the small groups and the rest of the congregation before and after the program.  The small groups experienced significannt spiritual renewal but the remainder of the congregation did not. Each group should be unique in method and format.  This work refutes the concept that there exists any one 'right group' that is capable of ministering to all people and to every type of need.  The author finds the basis for his thesis in the biblical record.  He determines that small group ministry would be more effective if it used the principles and methods of modern schools of therapy.  John Wesley's theology and methodology that concern the class meeting and the society guide this project.  The author updates this method to coincide with the needs of a twentieth century society.  The paper includes a description of a 'Groups With Purpose' project in one local church and a design for establishing and maintaining such a ministry in a body of believers. The paper concludes with a discussion of unresolved questions. From his own experience, the author proposes a new approach of volunteer work programs formed by small groups.  When they are thrown into an entirely new life situation students ask existential questions.  The way is then open for teachers to explain meanings of the Christian message. The theories of Erikson, Fowler and others provide the basis for discussions.  The role of the teacher is crucial in this approach.
