The author, therefore, sought for healthy models among growing churches in such settings and studied their common characteristics. Twenty-one possible growth dynamics were identified and eleven churches were studied to ascertain which of these dynamics were common to them and to what degree they might account for growth. Fifteen characteristics were found to contribute to the growth of churches and nine of these emerged as significant. Some of those who left the church for other churches were interviewed, as were the backsliders and regular attenders. The results indicated that something was lacking in the church. The desired results would be a larger number of persons saved and baptized in our church, resulting in church growth.  Before the crusade a telephone survey was conducted, with cards and visits.  The crusade was a success but the retention was terrible.  The people of Antioch Baptist Church worked harder than ever before in evangelism and saw many make professions of faith.  However, 95 percent of those who made professions of faith are no longer attending. Chapter 2 presents a theological, biblical, and theoretical foundation for this project.  Chapter 3 describes the involvement of the congregation, the development of the research tools, and the implementation of the research design.  The selection of participants for the various parts of the study and the presentation of research data from the churches are highlights of this chapter.  The ministry as conducted is described in chapter 4.  This chapter details the steps involved in the preaching and teaching ministry, and provides the synopses of the sermons preached to the Flint Hill congregation and the lessons taught to the small group. Chapter 5 evaluates the effectiveness of the methods chosen for this project. The two different methods are compared to determine their relative success and to determine the most effective. The community residents were pretested to determine initial levels.  A one-month intensive marketing campaign followed. Afterward, the community was posttested to determine any change. The writer developed a training event for pastors on the subject of church growth.  The event is based on the assumption that many pastors lack training in church growth.  The course of instruction involves an indigenous educational approach in which training occurs in small groups of five to seven pastors in their specific geographical setting.
