A case study for this project was from those completing a new members' course at the Independent Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN.  Data was collected by way of survey with questions pertaining to the biblical aspects of community, purpose, and structure. After education and planning, the project implemented two programs in a declining, thirty-year old church.  One used the church's strengths and resources; the other required strengths and resources the church did not have. Significant growth in attendance, membership and income resulted from the first program; nothing resulted from the second.  The author concludes that programs which use available strengths and resources will be more successful and develop more rapidly. From this analysis, six principles have been identified contributing to numerical growth: a church-centered life, conservative theology, dedicated pastors, prayer meetings, small group meetings, and the homogeneous unit.  The writer seeks to discover the correlation between the implementation of these principles and church growth.  By comparing the rate of growth between those churches that practice these principles with those that do not, a valid judgment was made whether a correlation exists between the adherence of these principles and church growth.  The writer's hypothesis was not supported. Various means were used to determine that perceptible attitudinal changes, attendance patterns, financial contributions, and growth of friendships were positively affected by the mission project, which involved building site activity, financial support, lunch-making and praying. The author sought respondents from a sample of greatly growing, a sample of moderately growing, and a sample of plateaued or declining Church of God congregations.  Sermons in greatly growing churches were significantly stronger in relevance/practicality, vision, a basis in God's Word, and focus of thought compared with sermons in moderately growing churches.
