Chapter one begins with 'hard feelings.' This chapter does not market a plan for a perfect church and pastor. Instead, it describes. Chapter two supplements autobiographical method with group process and family systems analysis. It documents the first two years of one new pastorate where the pastor intentionally focuses on prayer and proclamation.Chapter three suggests it wouldn't be right for pastors and parishioners to turn away from focusing on a ministry of the Word.Chapter four joins word ministry with a waiting ministry inviting pastors, parents and parishioners to pray. Ethnographic interviews 'field test' the claims of this chapter. Finally, chapter five concludes with not the least, priests. It invites church leaders to become not successes, but successors of those who have gone before them. Christologically, biblically, historically and autobiographically this chapter suggests that church leaders have already had their work cut out for them. They must, the chapter contends, preach and pray because it is what Jesus does, what the bible mandates, what his followers continue and what many ordained pastors have promised"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1755"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135728683450368,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:55:41.643Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:31:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:32:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"700fd658-b305-4f0c-8ada-cb403b1297f0","accessControl_ssim":["2d9ec579-d37b-4dae-be33-b104dd902c76"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Expository preaching and church growth: an integrative study"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:31:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:24:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2477d9e1-5646-47ea-befe-520b6d6e26c1"],"hasLease_ssim":["0246a8a1-3587-4bf9-b2db-ccf49a8ff543"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["S Donald Fortson"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Randall E Sawyer"],"publisher_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte campus"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral theology--Study and teaching","Expository preaching","Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project seeks to deal with church growth not merely in numerical terms but also spiritual. Mount Aery Baptist Church, a 77-year old, 1400 disciple African-American congregation, had recently experienced rapid growth. As a result, its leadership (Pastor and Officers) was often unable to adequately address the numerous congregational needs in a timely manner. Also, of great concern within the congregation was the qualifications needed to address those needs. The research disclosed that a definiite and unique relationship exists between pastoral leadership style and dynamic growth in Nazarene churches. The findings of the study confirmed that 'coaching' and 'catalyst' leadership styles are more apt to lead Nazarene churches to experience growth.
