Project"],"creator_tesim":["Rankin, Christopher"],"subject_tesim":["Church growth","Church renewal","Church management"],"abstract_tesim":["Since the early 1960s, the mainline church has experienced a decline in membership and financial resources, which have forced churches to make significant decisions concerning their future. Some congregations want to maintain the status quo and dwell in survival mode, while other churches are imagining new possibilities for their ministry. Denominations are faced with these same issues and now must make some decisions regarding their future. Revitalizing the Church for a New Day: Identity, Purpose, and Theology provides hope for the local church and denominations as we discern the new thing that God is doing in our midst. After reading books and visiting churches during a three-month sabbatical, a survey was designed for churches to use as they wrestle with these issues. I administered this survey with about a dozen congregations and then met with them in a follow-up discussion. Following my interviews with these congregations and going through my own transition in ministry, I discovered that denominations and local churches must focus on three aspects of vitality. Mainline denominations do not have a clear identity, which has trickled down to the local church. Furthermore, we have traded theology for marketing and advertising. The research revealed that our denominations are in decline because congregational leaders are not equipped to discern their identity, purpose, and theology of ministry. The author first heightened parishioners interest in personal evangelism, then demonstrated that personal evangelism was biblical and created a six-part training program to equip them on how to do personal evangelism. Participants were then given the opportunity to implement the principles they learned in order to determine the effectiveness of this strategy. The study demonstrated that personal evangelism is an effective strategy to grow a congregation. The goal of this project is to understand the principles behind the Bible's small groups, to understand the activity of small group movements by early Methodists and the modern cell movement, and to find a new model for the Luz Methodist Church. This project that the Luz members and I have worked together on for RELUZ (to light up again) revitalized the Luz church and brought in new members. Substantial church growth and revitalization came from remodeling the church through small groups combined with the cell church movement. However, many across the leadership of the church increasingly agree that because of the decline of mainline protestant churches for well over fifty years, we still use an old paradigm that focuses too much on counting people in the pews and money in the offering plates and rather than the whole panoply of the aspects of disciple-making. This report is a grounded theory research project that brings together data from surveys of 329 members of the Christian Community Development Association as well as interviews with 15 CCDA practitioners in Atlanta. The most important discovery that the author made was the state of disconnect among many pastors between what they believed about church growth and what was practiced in the local church. This state of disconnect may be a factor in church decline.
