These patterns are examined in the light of Biblical/theological reflection, as well as psychosocial dynamics that likely affect a member's 'sense of belonging.'  A review of spiritual renewal movements in the development of the Christian faith provides historical antecedents for the formation of a theology of discipleship mentoring ministry. There are many churches today throughout the world that cannot grow because of either a lack of leadership or nurtured environment or both.  This is a major concern because of the decrease in membership experienced by most denominations.  My primary premise is that a healthy church will not grow unless it has a strong lay leadership and a nurtured laity.  Churches today are trying many gimmicks to grow a healthy church.  They are doing whatever they can to add to their numbers.  Others are trying various means to increase financial giving.  Though these may be noble means, there needs to be a foundation in order to begin.  My thesis project begins with a short history of the church in which I serve.  I will provide my theological basis, literature review, and incorporate projects that I have given to various groups within the church. The research includes an overview of the church's history, a review of the literature relevant to church evaluation, and an examination of the church's spatial, financial, temporal, and human resources. The aim of the project is to ensure that Memorial aligns its ministries with its core values and mission, and at the same time optimizes the resources so as to best enable growth. The research team developed a survey to assess the presence of eight health characteristics: intentional evangelism, mobilized laity, transforming discipleship, engaging worship, passionate spirituality, empowering leadership, authentic community, and effective structures. The health was then compared to particular indices of growth. A positive relationship between health and growth was discovered. Bill Easum in churches of the Central Pennsylvania Conference United Methodist Church. Churches were measured against a standard of vitality derived from the classical and reformation 'marks' of the church as well as evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit.  Study results showed that Easum's strategies assisted congregations in uniting around a core mission and encouraged pastors to boldly preach the Lordship of Jesus Christ. In order to lay a groundwork for this study, several sources were surveyed including Scripture, theological writings, church growth literature, books on leadership, management, transition, and change theory.  Field research was conducted which consisted of interviews with thirty pastors from the Christian and Missionary Alliance and other denominations. The correlation between transferable church health characteristics and quantitative church growth is analyzed with the use of a researcher-designed questionnaire.  The literature review studies the organic and organizational aspects of church health through a theological understanding of the church as community. The findings demonstrate a positive relationship between the perception of church health and church growth. The study categorizes the leadership attributes listed in 1 Timothy 3:2, 2 Timothy 2:24 and Titus 1:6-7 into six dimensions to measure the quality of ruling elders.    Data collected from 92 pastors via questionnaire, was analyzed to test the validity of the study using SPSS Procedure Factor Analysis and Reliability.
