Since its establishment in 1921, the Botswana SDA Church has not experienced consistent growth.  By year-end 2000 it had a baptized membership of 20,295, twenty-four national pastors, fifty-seven organized churches, and eighty-six companies.  A statistical analysis for 1990 to 2000 shows a decrease in annual baptisms and a steady increase in drop-outs, missing, and dying members.  In an attempt to find a way in which the two fields could be helped to experience growth, this study looked carefully at two things: (1) Botswana's historical background, and (2) Botswana's growth patterns, as well as reasons for both growth and non-growth.  A questionnaire was administered to 206 members of six selected churches. The results of the field survey were organized into tables giving frequencies and percentages of the responses.  The data were analyzed and conclusions drawn based on the responses.  The final results of the field survey showed that the following issues hinder growth and must be attended to if the two fields are to experience healthy growth: lack of lay involvement, poor spirituality of church members, insufficient numbers of pastors to fill district positions, great losses due to drop-outs and missing members, poor giving of tithes and offerings, lack of consistent church planting, and lack of SDA schools to foster Christian education. Based on the analysis of the field surveys, some church growth strategies are suggested to enable the church to address factors hindering growth: (1) Conduct church growth awareness seminars, (2) emphasize personal spiritual formation, lay training, and assimilation strategies, and (3) stress church planting movements, and Christian education. The researcher defines a properly functioning congregation as a thriving congregation, which meets its goals in various areas of its life.  Churches that fail to thrive need to look for the barriers that prevent them from accomplishing this goal.  This study is an effort to find the barriers in two churches in western Indiana by means of interviews, surveys, observation of groups within the churches, and from statistical records. Chapter 1 outlines the purpose and goals of the project and gives one a sense of the history and setting of Cave City Baptist Church. A brief summary of the value of church marketing and definitions are included. Chapter 2 begins with a brief survey of the state of the church in North America, but is primarily devoted to providing a strong biblical defense of some church marketing concepts. Included is application of how churches can contextualize these concepts in their fields. Chapter 3 gives the reader a summary of the rural state of the church today. Then it provides a rather comprehensive analysis of modern marketing terms, methods, strategies and also examples of how some churches, both rural and urban, have succeeded in growth using missiological church marketing. Chapter 4 gives a step-by-step description of the project as it was executed during the summer of 2002. Some evaluation is included. Chapter 5 provides a more thorough evaluation and and analysis of the project results with some personal observations. This work contends that although these is some danger in blindly applying concepts of church marketing without biblical foresight, there are some church marketing principles which can be defended from the scriptures and used to expand the kingdom of God. Many small LCMS churches are not growing in a variety of areas.  The author researched helping churches by visiting eleven churches and giving them suggestions.  He then revisited the churches three months later to evaluate growth.  Eight churches grew in a variety of ways, two were stagnant, and one closed. The context of this study is Trinity United Church of Christ, a sub-urban, predominantly European-American congregation located on the north side of Columbus, Ohio, which desires to grow.  The methodology used to achieve this goal is an intervention, composed of four interwoven facets, designed as a unit to remove barriers that prevent church growth.  The findings of this project confirm that church growth becomes probable through this intervention. Specific redemptive gifts and spiritual strongholds were identified in the church and community.
