Lack of foreign missionaries during much of this time left Estonian Methodism with a strong, indigenous leadership, but it has also inherited an indefinite ecclesiology and an incomplete understanding of the sacraments, which have issued in confusion of identity. More than 70,000 persons visited the church in 1995, and its varied use by community groups and agencies, its status on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980, and its preparation to become a National Historic Landmark are indications that the 15 September 1963 bombing of the church has changed its ministry. This project traces the history of American mainline Protestantism, especially the Presbyterian Church (USA), and identifies the most important causes and consequences of disestablishment. The project isolates theological themes and establishes future trajectories to move mainline churches into the comingmillennium.
