The Zimbabwean United Methodist Church is continuing to experience considerable numerical and spiritual growth. However, pastors do not have educational resources which are adequate to train new members and mature old ones. The preparation of candidates for baptism and confirmation is identified as a critical need and the project focuses on developing materials to be used by pastors in this preparation. The intent is to equip pastors with teaching strategies and tools (rather than lesson plans), and material is compiled from historical and biblical perspectives. Resources utilized include conversations with district superintendents and pastors, surveys of church members, and archival material accessed in Zimbabwe. The author explores how people who are displaced from their cultures and/or families of origin experience the church as 'home'. The study used a survey to gather information on their ethnic identity, their experience at church, their evaluation of church ministry, as well as their aspirations for the future. There is a predictable development pattern for the EM in a typical immigrant church, and key steps that must be taken in order to allow it to grow to maturity. Two areas that are explored in detail are leadership development, including leadership structure, and the influence of ethnic identity and other factors on the decision of adult ABCs about attendance of a Chinese church. This study highlights the most often faced biblical and cultural issues in Chinese churches. The author interviewed 13 of the largest Chinese churches in the San Francisco Bay area to discover their candidating process.  As a result, key principles and a ministry model were developed to clarify these issues. The congregation is a small Presbyterian church located across the street from a Presbyterian-related liberal arts college, in north-west Texas, where the community and church are in transition.
