John Bomberger and later James I. Goode had theological objections to the Evangelical Catholic reforms, so Bomberger and others opened a competing seminary called Ursinus (now Urinus College) to prepare low church clergy for the ministry in competition with Mercersburg (which later moved to Lancaster and became Lancaster Theological Seminary). My interest lies in the distinctive features of the Ursinus movement in order to determine how it had an impact on one congregation, Wolf’s Church. I hope to uncover the ways in which its theological principles encouraged certain ecclesial practices that lingered long after the controversy with the Mercersburg movement had faded from the congregation’s memory. My work answers the question, “What were the theological convictions and ecclesiastical practices of the Ursinus Movement as a response to the Mercersburg theology in its 19th century German Reformed Church context, including key figures, casual factors, salient features, features of the “Ursinus” piety/theology as distinct from Mercersburg, etc. Having identified the salient and distinctive characteristics of the Ursinus tradition, I then will explore the ways in which this heritage may have informed the ecclesial practices of Wolf’s Church and kept that legacy alive even when the congregants could not articulate the characteristics of the Ursinus tradition or even identify the theology embedded in their exposure in their corporate life as being in the Ursinus mold."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860296763703296,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:42.596Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:02:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:52:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0885bd61-9aab-40cf-96c5-3285fa9a961e","accessControl_ssim":["0dff1ceb-dffc-4f55-884f-fba9ead11ea9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Claiming lives when justice is denied"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T20:02:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:46:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9117b742-45d6-4169-95e0-98cb5b0680fe"],"hasLease_ssim":["b6148175-91bd-4111-8b08-bce5832239d9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Lee Barrett"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"location_tesim":["Turkey","Armenia"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. In this essay, the reader will be introduced to the denial on the part of the Turkish government and the role of the Ottoman Turkish government in the genocide of Armenians in 1915. It is my position that denial creates a burden for the survivors of genocide and other traumas. I contend that the victims need to receive a sense of agency in considering forgiveness as an on-going spiritual practice instead of an immediate destination. We will consider voices in the current conversation about forgiveness and discover that they all come to somewhat of the same conclusion that we must all forgive. Forgiveness is seen as a mandate of Christian piety and we must also be agents of forgiveness for our own wellbeing. I agree and yet find these positions to be limited. I propose that we take this saying of Jesus on the cross, \"Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing,\" and consider how this is his moment of emptying himself and claiming the fullness of his humanity in all of its limitations. In this moment he is praying and releasing his desire for forgiveness to God. We do not know if he refused to say \"I‚\" forgive you. While forgiveness is inherent in the act of even praying for his \"Father‚\" to do so, it is a profound moment and a model for victims and survivors to move further on the spiritual journey toward thriving."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/dissertations-theses/claiming-lives-peace-when-justice-is-denied/docview/1369007254/se-2"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873237356511232,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:52:23.707Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:51:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:58:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5d59aad7-60be-44cb-b815-05a32b51ccba","accessControl_ssim":["1b7937c5-3a64-4dc8-beec-186fdfbb5c52"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The study of the influence of a fervent prayer ministry and cooperative service ministry in the successful total mobilization evangelization event of Korean churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:50:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:52:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["50288aa4-f52e-4d4f-8fca-8534148473d4"],"hasLease_ssim":["c42ab0a6-25ad-4838-876c-a07cb1950433"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Mike Morris"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"location_tesim":["Korea"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Seong Hak Lee"],"publisher_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Evangelistic work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The total mobilization has been a fruit-bearing type of evangelism in Korea since the 1990s. This dissertation encouraged church leaders to do total mobilization through the two main wings of a successful evangelism event, which are fervent prayer ministry and cooperative service ministry. The ministry of Jesus and the early church demonstrated how prayer and service ministry promote effective evangelism. The history of the Korean church's evangelism methods and the crusade evangelism in the United States revealed that fervent prayer and service ministry determined the effectiveness of total mobilization. Tongan traditional religion which formed Tongan culture and society still impacts Tongan Christianity. Traditional religious culture has a hierarchical structure which has influenced all segments of society and even Christian beliefs and practices. Immigrant churches have adopted the same hierarchical structure and added other social status, such as wealth and achievement, which create more physical and psychological barriers in the church community. The social issues add up to an unhealthy church, ministry, and Tongan community at large that causes divisions among families. This project relies heavily on historical research to identify the ways in which Christianity as a fledgling religion was able to succeed against the great religions of the Greco-Roman world. Finally, the project concludes that Christianity brought a gospel of hope to the world full of haplessness, especially to the masses in the Greco-Roman world. Christianity created a new community that served the needs of the destitute, generated a sense of belonging, welfare/health agency, and treated everyone inclusively with equality. These findings can provide guidance for a ministry that addresses the cultural hierarchy and traditional theological issues for a revitalized Christianity in both the Tongan and immigrant church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131728756080640,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:52:07.015Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:36:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:13:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0f851472-0440-4603-94db-71f8db81b21e","accessControl_ssim":["7f0ca854-969d-44ca-b1dd-bcb83778c1cb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Sex training within the Washington, DC, metropolitan area black church community: a call and response"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:36:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:33:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bd1249ef-6a72-47d6-abee-8d55f823bdb1"],"hasLease_ssim":["0380885f-c116-4840-82ba-ec835e9c64ef"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Cedric C Johnson"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"location_tesim":["Washington (D.C.)"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The study was successful in demonstrating how the theme of 'holiness' would bring significant changes to the members of the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130791076429824,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:37:12.774Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:18:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:22:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fec768e3-6e09-4b9a-b3fc-cdeaf0217352","accessControl_ssim":["0dbf9082-3e54-4aa9-936b-adb9fd9b1785"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Collaborative ministry: a model for the church and community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:18:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:24:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1c25d957-4ea6-4c54-a384-8532e0d26a3e"],"hasLease_ssim":["7a82f3f5-f535-4842-9dd2-48c8173c55c9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marcia Y Riggs"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"location_tesim":["Georgia--Decatur County"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gerald F Richardson"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cooperative Church work","Church history","Church work with people experiencing homelessness","Decatur Cooperative Church work (Decatur, Ga)","Church and social problems"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that collaborative ministry is an effective way of addressing social problems such as homelessness and hunger in the community.
