With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. The researcher engaged the qualitative research design methods of descriptive survey questionnaires and group interviews in order to identify possible socio-theological reasons. The study included three groups of ten African American men: one group was African American men, 30-40 years old, who never attended church except for childhood exposures; another was a group of African American men, 30-40 years old, who attended church but stopped within the last ten years; and the third group was African American men who stayed in church over the last forty to fifty years. The results were analyzed by content and comparative content analysis as well as cross referenced with previous research results from church theologians and social science scholars. The socio-theological reasons identified are: a felt tension in his ontology related to stress on/from familial and ecclesiastical relationships and from the effect of urbanicity and region on his ontological, familial and ecclesiastical relationships. This project examined two coaching tools, Gallup StrengthsFinder and World Harvest Mission Gospel-Centered Life, to determine if using them in combination improved team effectiveness to a greater degree than using either tool alone.  Seventeen participants on two core leadership teams from church plants in urban Philadelphia were trained with both tools.  The qualitative research was conducted by self-evaluation surveys that gathered  information before and after each phase of training. Using a pro-active research method, members were surveyed and interviewed, resulting in a grief program which includes education, grief groups and systematic follow-up. It was discovered during the project that evangelism was a surprising benefit of the grief process. This research was held in January 2009. During this phase the author wrote and mailed invitational letters to pastors and churches to participate in her research. Based upon the response and support she received from the invitational letter the end results yielded one leadership team which was represented during the entire research.  A workshop and seminar was held at a selected church within the county once a month. The author's personal interviews were designed to identify the various stages of the HIV/AIDS virus and to assess the family needs. The ends results yielded that, as persons progress with the HIV/AIDS virus, the greater the need and care is required by the family. Traditionally, this task of preparing full-time church leaders has been given to the seminary without any examination of the other options available. Through case study and grounded theory, this project revealed seven components that can address this problem. These components are essential whether the leadership development process is in partnership with a seminary or whether it is completely church-based.
