This paper explores the history of the church in Maine and examines those historical factors that have prevented the church from ministering effectively today. It also examines a unique moment in the church's history, a statewide evangelistic crusade by evangelist Luis Palau in 1999 and the immediate and long-term impact of the crusade on the churches and communities of Maine. Finally, some conclusions are drawn regarding what the crusade taught the church about evangelism and renewal in New England today. It is concerned with the question of what were the elements that brought about this youth revival and what caused its decline. Then with this information, and given the current state of youth ministry in Boston, what would it take for another city wide youth ministry to happen again? A primary premise of the work is a historic review using a systems thinking approach. Systems analysis provided a view of the interrelated elements of an otherwise complex setting between Modernity and Postmodernity, Urban and Suburban youth, Traditional Boston Churches and the Coming Together Youth led movement. Secondly, this study discusses the various models of congregational life cycles to tell the story in eight stages of the rise and decline of the C2 movement. The primary research project of this work was using the Hexagon technique for developing systems analysis of particular environments. Using this method, this study was able to determine the five principles of the C2. The five principles of Coming Together are: 1. C2 is a movement responding to the dynamic work of the Holy Spirit in youth. 2. C2 is a Christian Youth led movement. 3. C2 utilizes a team approach in sharing, of leadership, vision and resources. 4. C2 seeks to build and celebrate Christ-centered, interracial relationships among urban and suburban youth groups. 5. C2 seeks to provide a supportive network of adult youth leaders. This study then analyzed these principles through the grid of systems thinking and developed a causal loop diagram for further analysis. In this diagram it was discovered how the C2 was a system of reinforcing elements that once placed in motion would become productive. This analysis also demonstrated that the reinforcing aspect for the C2 system could become counter-productive if any change occurred in one of the principles. Next this study analyzed the current state of youth ministry in Boston, what has to happen to bring forth a city-wide youth ministry through systems analysis Hexagon project with current youth ministers in Boston. Through the development of another causal loop diagram of this question, the leverage points for effecting change in the current system of youth work in Boston was determined. This study proposes that the five principles of C2 could still be an effective leverage to bring about city-wide ministry. Although the form of this youth ministry would be different base upon a new generation of youth in a changing context. It was also suggested that these principles are transferable to other settings, although the programmatic outcomes would be different according to the environment. The final outcome of the life cycle study of C2 is found that out of the death of the movement came to the resurrection of a multiplication of new and vibrant youth programs. A key learning from C2 study is best summarized by the words of Jesus when he said, 'I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds,' (John 12:24)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129943077289984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:44.059Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:03:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:06:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8dd93013-4031-4c5f-8328-81deaf6ab0d9","accessControl_ssim":["7adb972c-eed3-41be-b582-698d39b265b8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing an assimilation strategy for new members of Calvary Baptist Church, Elizabethton, Tennessee"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:03:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:17:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8df29a00-ef59-4c1d-87d9-b4cb9a9aa7da"],"hasLease_ssim":["71dde055-5206-405c-b562-ed14a436cf53"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles E Lawless"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joseph S Sorah"],"publisher_tesim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Assimilation (Sociology)","Tennessee","Church history","Church membership"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project describes the development of an assimilation strategy at Calvary Baptist Church, Elizabethton, Tennessee. Larger membership churches have particular gifts for launching larger membership new church developments (NCD's). This legacy encourages the launch of another larger membership NCD after contemporary adjustments are made to the missiology of these previous styles of NCD. Special attention is given to the different types of preparation for church planting. Chapter 5 is the author's personal reflection on the project. The American Restoration Movement, and its particular branch known as Churches of Christ (a cappell), has a rich and varied history in New England. Currently there are approximately 104 congregations totaling about 5749 members. Yet, due to the autonomy of these churches, accurate accounting is somewhat inhibited. What do these churches look like? Past research has focused solely on attendance figures and did not address other research possibilities such as demographic, religiosity and attitudinal aspects of the tradition. The thesis-project seeks to answer the question by gleaning data from a particular survey instrument that uses demographic, religiosity and attitudinal options. The thesis begins with an explanation of the genesis of the survey and the methodology used to collect the data. Two chapters, then, are devoted to analyzing demographic, religiosity and attitudinal data. With the assistance of the survey's data, a picture of what New England Churches of Christ look like at the start of this new millennium is developed. Demographic and religiosity data is shared in order to get behind the attendance figures and gain a more complete picture of this movement. Attitudinal data, which is based on certain characteristics, or indicators, of church 'health' is used to assess the vitality of the group. A third chapter, related to the survey, offers some perspective on various opportunities and challenges the tradition will face in the coming years. A final chapter puts flesh on this thesis. It is a presentation and summary of one church's recent strategic attempt, through the use of an instrument called a vision notebook, to assess their current situation and then seek to implement the ten health indicators into their local church in an intentional, healthy, and effective way. The goal of the thesis-project is to paint a picture of the tradition, offer some insights into her current state, and tender a few challenges. The premise of the work is that Churches of Christ must know who they are if they are to develop a fuller identity and be useful to their communities in the new millennium."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132979713540096,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:12:00.021Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:51:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:52:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9666e59d-3d7a-49eb-a073-9b681aa2f08f","accessControl_ssim":["670234a8-15dc-4527-aaf0-e0c8c7f02e6e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A year round church in a seasonal town: local church ministry in New England resort communities"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:51:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:32:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["17186612-7a4c-443d-8db5-db7358635243"],"hasLease_ssim":["4fea47e4-e712-4b22-96a9-dbbb45444f96"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["United States","Maine--Ogunquit","New England"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David R Clark"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cities and towns","Church history","Resorts","Missions"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["There are many communities in New England that, because of tourism, are seasonal in nature.
