This study presupposes a working knowledge of church growth principles. The manual has five chapters, an appendix and a bibliography.Chapter One introduces the term paraprofessional and describes the climate in the church creating the need for this new type of church staffing.Chapter Two further establishes the need for discipleship and growth today. The business model of staffing and management principles adds credibility to paraprofessionals. Growth is documented through this multi-level staffing model by a partial survey of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod congregations already using such staff.Chapter Three builds a biblical and confessional base for the paraprofessional model by identifying the call of every Christian in baptism, the special call of the professional church worker, and the special call of the paraprofessional and volunteer staff.Chapter Four outlines the way paraprofessionals have evolved at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Kentwood, Michigan. This hypothesis was investigated using a group of eleven lay leaders who are responsible for the management of church committees and organizations.  The project group identified their spiritual gifts and their normal leadership styles.  The author conducted objective and subjective tests of the group's leadership performance level before and after the project.  He used the descriptive survey method to analyze and evaluate the group's performance.  The project group's leadership performance of eight normal leadership tasks increased 12 percent due to the training.  Objective application of new leadership skills also increased the participants' efficiency. It develops that planning strategy using the following assumptions: 1) lay people in the church are equipped for leadership; 2) lay people in the church desire to be a part of the planning process; 3) when there is a broad base of involvement in the planning process, there is more involvement in the implementation of the plan; and 4) when more people are involved in planning and implementing, it is more likely that goals will be reached.  The project is developed in cooperation with the Church Council members of Forest Avenue Baptist Church, Redmond, Oregon.  It develops goals and objectives for the 1986-87 church year.  The method of planning is adapted from that recommended by the Inter-Agency Council of the Southern Baptist Convention. The theological, social, andragogical, and methodological approaches to the study of conflict management and reconciliation undergird the development of a six-module seminar.  This seminar exposes ministers to skills which aid interpersonal relationships: listening, assertiveness, conflict resolution, collaborative problem-solving, and skill selection.
