Churches face significant challenges when senior pastors retire or transition without succession plans.\r\n\r\nThis study concluded that there are ten significant findings and ten actions that can reduce congregational anxiety and enhance the organizational continuity during a succession. The study found that congregations should be understood as emotional systems and that senior pastor transitions cause organizational anxiety. Self-differentiated leaders are essential to a healthy succession planning process, due to the emotional nature of the congregation. Succession plans that create organizational continuity must be aligned with a church’s mission, vision, and values.\r\n\r\nThe most important person in the succession planning process is the transitioning senior pastor. Senior pastors who remove significant barriers for their successor’s benefit have more succession success than those that do not. Contrary to popular belief, differentiated senior pastors can remain on staff after their transition in a reduced role. The longer the tenure of the transitioning senior pastor, the longer the succession planning process ought to be.\r\n\r\nTen hiring practices were recommended to alleviate the challenge of finding and hiring a successor: hire a culture fit, hire and develop an internal candidate, hire a young generalist, hire a successor years before their transition, and hire a succession consultant. Exodus"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This Doctor of Ministry Project researched six pastors in Western North Carolina to see how they balance administrative duties and evangelistic efforts to produce a healthy church. The project began from my experience of pastoring three churches in the area and experiencing the struggles firsthand. It then looked into the Scriptures to understand the historical accounts and theology of administration and evangelism to comprehend the responsibilities of pastors. Further research was conducted from literature to evaluate what others say about the subject and if they have discovered this problem.  The data was collected through qualitative research of interviews with six pastors. The interviews were conducted with ten questions to discover how they balance administrative duties and evangelistic efforts as a pastor. The interviews were analyzed and synthesized from their experiences, theology, and literary viewpoints for the conclusions.The research results showed a problem among pastors who have administrative demands on them because of the expectation of the congregation or the lack of others willing to take responsibility. The research also showed that evangelism efforts fail to reach the community because of the heavy administrative load of the pastor. The final results show, pastors that do have a balance, revamped or updated how administration is done, to simplify it for both him and the congregation. The process of updating the administration did require time for trust to build between the pastor and the congregation. The study begins by demonstrating the debate over the use and interpretation of the BCO within the PCA. It introduces the debate by putting the BCO into the context of the Constitution of the PCA, examining its relation to the Westminster Standards, and how subscription to the Standards affects operating under the BCO. Having put the BCO into the larger context of the Constitution of the PCA, it explores the current debate over polity before examining the resources available to illuminate the BCO. The study moves then to the basic biblical principles of Presbyterian church government. It investigates the headship of Christ as the foundational principle of Church government before working out the implications of his headship in jure divino government and the regulative principle. An examination of Acts 15 shows Christ’s headship in action in the life of the Church, leading to an exploration of the fundamental Scriptural principles that underlie and shape Presbyterian polity. The study then surveys the historical development of the BCO from its beginnings in the Colonial era to the current time to see the significant influences that shaped it. This historical context gives the framework to understand both the larger shape of the Church laid out by the BCO and some of the individual provisions.
