The dissertation analyzes the five passages of the New Testament on the subject, reflects on centuries of Catholic practice and tradition, states current church law, presents the damage of folklore about divorce and remarriage, and describes support groups. The final guide book was prepared through developing an experimental curriculum, testing it in the new member class and evaluating it. The book's format consists of 52 lessons in a one year cycle. To uncover these factors twenty-eight 'main-line' Protestant church members were interviewed, each having been a member of a rural or small town church at the time of divorce.  The interviews revealed specific factors that caused some divorcing people to leave the church and other factors that enabled some to remain active. Training materials were prepared, tested in class situations, and critiqued by people with expertise in the areas stated in the thesis.  The study has shown that acceptability by the targeted audience and adequate educational quality are key factors for successful publication of materials. Two-fold research design: (1) narrative background to the generation's history and experience in the decades of the fifties through the mid-eighties; and (2) survey of religious experience and attitudes of 229 respondents, aged 25-36. Data from 59 questions analyzed by 10-church rank; religious types; six sub-samples; male/female; and born-again/not born-again. The goals of this project are: 1) to systematize some practical, life-related biblical principles that have shaped the scriptural understanding of present church members; 2) to develop a means of introducing new members to these principles; 3) to facilitate the orientation of new members to the biblical concepts that have influenced the church family; 4) to help new members identify areas of personal need and find initial solutions, visualizing the church as a resource for growth and development; 5) to provide small group learning experiences, giving opportunity for bonding, security, and friendship.  The validation of the project is supported by both theology and survey resources.
