This project documents the need for an intentional process of integration.  The author contends that a change occurs both in the new member and the congregation, and the congregation must be sensitive to those changes.  He proposes a model for integration and a tool for evaluation to help the maturing congregation remain sensitive. The study is based on a Factor Analysis of 155 questionnaires, gathered from individuals who attend 12 UCC churches and one conference. It reveals that dual-paycheck families do not value any function of a church's ministry more than single-paycheck families.  It also reveals that the more one is involved in church activities, the more one values all church activities. The study was based on 250 interviews with persons who have become disassociated with the church and with those who are active church leaders and lay persons.  The interviews revealed that the major factor for both apostasy and inactive membership was problems concerning marriage and divorce.  A second factor was lack of support in times of crisis.  Other causes were movement between cities and decline in spiritual life.  The conclusion highlights several causes of apostasy. It presents a biblical and theological foundation for evangelism and growth.  The study condenses general church growth theories and principles into their main principles and highlights unique features of growth in the middle-sized church.  It enumerates the distinctive features of United Methodist churches which may help or hinder growth.  The project then examines growth potential of a specific congregation.  It suggests a model for a five year growth plan and a process for implementing these recommendations.
