Factors impacting assimilation were determined.  A ministry was designed.  A group of sponsors was enlisted and trained.  A test of the ministry was conducted.  Evaluation of the ministry was performed by means of descriptive survey methodology, simple statistical analysis, and critical pastoral reflection.  New members who had been sponsored showed a statistically significant increase (p = less than .1) in assimilation for three of the seven indicators tested. The procedure was to design a process to encourage more people to be active.  There was a survey of needs and a personal study of leadership that equips.  A small group Bible study was designed and taught to teach the priesthood of all believers, to help people discover spiritual gifts, and to learn personality type. Fifteen people participated in the Bible study. Awareness was increased.  An organizational system was designed for helping people begin to serve. Over 500 visitors pass through the church every year.  Most are seeking a new church.  In spite of this, attendance has remained flat for five years. Intentional involvement of new people should increase their chance of staying with the church.  Changes were made in purpose, vision, organization, and leadership. After one year, questionnaires were answered by those who stayed and left after attending for a while. This project was designed to answer that question and to be an instrument used by other churches in Appalachia to enhance the meaning of church membership.  The project utilized a thirteen-week discussion manual and video.  The course dealt with those topics of interest determined by members who were surveyed within the author's context of ministry. This proposal recommends maintaining requirements which are directly scriptural, and moving present requirements which are mostly historical, social and cultural in origin to the category of special directions (admonitions not required for membership).  The methodological approach involved equipping the elders through training sessions. Eight weekly sessions were conducted involving twelve recent candidates for membership. Individual pre-training and post-training interviews with questionnaires were conducted to provide information as to any changes in interest, attitude and/or understanding of the meaning of church membership. Training sessions included a grounding in the six major dimensions of the Christian faith and the meaning of living the gospel.  Through this project it was not possible to determine whether the training process would or would not prevent these new members from becoming inactive.  The new members definitely increased their understanding of the faith. Interest and enthusiasm was engendered for more study of scripture and the mission of the church. The challenge of designing and carrying out a new member assimilation program aimed at introducing new members to the full range of opportunities for members to participate faithfully is the focus of this study.  The theological principle undergirding this study maintains that the church is ideally a human community that attracts and receives new members, seeks to introduce them to its shared values, norms, memory, convictions and actions so they may participate fully in its life and work as 'citizens in the community of faith.'  This study examines citizenship from biblical, historical and sociological points of view. The most important conclusions of this study are that people joining a church are seeking ways to become fully participatory in a faith community; that the process of assimilation requires the common knowledge of opportunities open to all participants to experience the benefits and responsibilities of belonging; and that effective assimilation processes are a collective
