The project utilizes four research methods: survey, interview, pretest and posttest analysis, and a five session study on baptism.  Chapter one outlines the project's goals, the methodologies that assess these goals, and the setting for the project.  Chapter two contains a biblical and historical overview of the rite of baptism.  The third chapter looks at cultural trends and dynamics that affect Middleburg Baptist Church. Chapter four analyzes current baptismal beliefs and practices within the church.  Chapter five presents conclusions and evaluations.  The project concludes that believer's baptism by immersion best reflects the biblical, historical and theological history of Christian baptism.  It also affirms that this practice is not without exceptions. A questionnaire that assesses the discipleship profile of individual church members will be used to determine the causes for membership dropout.  Based on the findings of the survey, a pilot discipleship program will be designed and introduced to churches in the Baptist Union that focuses on specific techniques to improve membership assimilation and retention.  Eight churches representative of those found in the Baptist Union will be selected by the project coordinator working with a committee selected by the leadership of the Baptist Union of Uganda.  From these churches, members will be randomly chosen to participate in the questionnaire. Data from the questionnaires will be collected, tabulated, and analyzed to ascertain the characteristics of each church according to the following criteria:  attitudes, conduct/behavior, relationships to God and people, ministry involvement, and beliefs. New systems and teams were created or renewed in preparation for this new era of ministry. A lay mobilization process and assimilation method was put into place to integrate people and build disciples. A staffing plan was implemented in the process. These sessions will instruct the participants concerning the need for new member assimilation and the biblical basis for this need. Additionally, methods for new member assimilation will be explored.  During the seminar the participants will develop their own assimilation plan.  Near the end of the training, participants will be assigned a new church family to adopt. At the end of the first and second weeks with their new family, the participants will report on how the assimilation plan is working. Additionally, after spending two months with the new family the participants will give another report. The pastor and a team of lay persons led 'Steps to Belonging.'
