The project director used the strategy-planning model to design and implement the project.  The program included a two-hour membership class and a six-week mentoring assignment.  Each new member was assigned a mentor based on age and marital status.  Adult new members will acquire a greater understanding of church theology and philosophy with a membership class. Profile and survey data for 126 adult members received over a six-year period were used to study factors influencing their experience with the church, with the pastor, and their preparation for membership.  A program of monthly pastoral correspondences for the member's first year was designed to encourage biblically based responses in two-way communication with the pastor. The author studies the historical origins of the denomination and sister denominations to determine the ecology of the Church.  Community diversity and postmodernism influence this problem.  The author interviewed 68 individuals regarding reasons for leaving churches.  Sociological differences, varying stages of faith development, and possible misunderstanding give insight on the gap between pastor and congregants.  Rediscovering the communal foundation of the Eucharist may help. This qualitative case study of thirty-three participants revealed that the primary reason for their active membership was rooted in relationships and participation in small groups including lay ministries.  A second reason was their commitment to lay ministry.  The third reason emerged from religious consumerism and opportunities for faith development. The multi-case approach selected fifteen leading churches from among the fifty largest churches in the Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington metropolitan area and conducted on-site interviews.  The major findings of this study were in three areas: personal relationships, intentionality, and small groups.  Personal relationships were the most significant reason why unchurched people were attracted to and stayed in church.  These churches were intentional in reaching lost people, welcoming visitors, and providing spiritual formation. The project utilizes a survey procedure sampling 345 Faithbridge attenders who responded to a researcher-designed questionnaire.  Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate responses.  Factors most highly associated with Faithbridge's assimilation initiatives related to personal discipleship, utilizing women in leadership, developing leaders, pastoral emphasis on assimilation, asking for high levels of commitment, and clearly defining the profile of an assimilated individual.
