The author's purpose was to investigate why the church died by performing a complete autopsy on the church body. His examination included a review of pre-existing conditions, examples from Scripture, and research from contemporary authors. The key evidence in the case came from the results of a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with church members. In the end the author determined that the cause of death was due to complications surrounding stagnant leadership. Ten couples participated in a process of conceptual education, practical training, and guided application of biblical concepts targeting enhanced spiritual discipline practices and improved couple understanding skills. Couples listened to five sermons, attended two training workshops, and completed an eight-week home practicum. Participants were to practice two spiritual disciplines twice each week for eight weeks and engage in two communication events (where they pursued understanding their spouse) each week for six weeks. The project contains a literature review of the biblical foundation for church membership and the historical development of church membership, followed by two case studies. Church membership in America is declining, and many church leaders wrestle with the place of membership within their own organizations. Many church leaders overlook the role that a membership process can have in the development of disciples. The case studies included in this paper are two examples of churches that seek to use their membership process to enhance discipleship. These churches have a robust process that clearly communicates the expectations of the church with systems in place for accountability and follow-up. This project focuses on the implementation of missional principles in a particular congregation to shift its narrative of decline to a narrative of revitalization. The report explores Second Presbyterian Church's historical identity leading to its period of decline, identifies missional principles, and then traces the narrative of the implementation of those principles within the congregation.
