Many nonprofit organizations are continuing this trend in an attempt to address financial needs, explore new opportunities and consolidate service in overlapping markets. This project examines the initial steps of the merger process of two United Methodist Churches within the Western North Carolina Conference. This ministry research model will include: a rationale for a mentor-enabled assimilation process; an explanation of how to implement the plan in a local church; a description of the qualifications of mentors and how to enlist and train them; four representative lessons of a twelve-lesson curriculum; and a teaching plan for the mentors for each of the included four lessons. First, the project director obtained approval from the church congregation to allow the director to establish a ministry team that would develop the process.  Second, the director researched available materials on assimilation strategies in preparation for equipping team members.  Third, the director explored the field of curriculum design to gain the skills required to create a series of sessions in which the enlisted team members were equipped.  Fourth, the director led the sessions as team members developed the process.  Last, the ministry team presented the proposed process to the congregation for consideration. While testing a survey to assess the propensity, the author discovered that pastor-size churches were answering like program-size churches.  The quantitative project gave way to qualitative analysis. The strategy utilized a qualitive research method and included revisions to the new member class and the recruiting and training of shepherd's partners, who helped new members through the initial phase of assimilation in the following areas: completion of the new member class, development of relationships, engagement in ministry opportunities, and receiving information that fosters their spiritual growth. The Scripture study wrestles with the topic of authority that God has vested in His servants who are appointed to leadership in the church and also whether the discipline carried out in the early church is applicable to today's setting.  The restorative nature of discipline is explored in the section dealing with theology of ministry. The researcher implemented a diversity workshop, cultural heritage awareness night and focus group.  A questionnaire was used to develop qualitative data to evaluate the project.  The final product was a 'compendium of connectivity' which identified how current members may see new members as empowered, connected, or disconnected. Ten pastors were interviewed about membership, visitor follow-up, involvement without pastors, and restoration of those who left one church for another local church. They were exposed to concepts involving the greater church body in the restoration process especially when there had been immorality or divisiveness.
