The theoretical background focused on the study of the nature of belief and disbelief.  Interviews of 20 adults were conducted and analyzed.  The results indicate that a variety of factors contribute to the rejection of formerly-held beliefs; however, most often factors indicated poor judgment on the part of local church leadership. Based on the concepts that ministry is for reconciliation, and listening is a vital ministry, the project sought to train lay church members in the art of creative listening.  These trained listeners then called on other church members--especially the disaffected--in an attempt to achieve reconciliation. A seven-week stimulus was implemented.  It included an orientation, seven classes, four sermons, a mentoring component, and a graduation ceremony.  Quantitative and qualitative analysis instruments-- pre-test/post-test and interviews-- showed a statistically significant increase in the sample population's participation in church activities and knowledge of church terms. The study set out to evaluate the perceptions of selected Free Methodist clergy and ality concerning the way that changes are impacting new members' discipleship. This study used both qualitative and quantitative research, utilizing 46 interviews and 162 survey questionnaires with no comparison group.  When new members have an increased understanding of the principles behind the standards of conduct held by the Free Methodist Church they also: 1) feel they belong to their local congregations and to God; 2) are growing in their spiritual maturity; 3) make the Christian conduct standards a part of their regular behavior; and 4) are growing in their relationships with Jesus Christ. A significant percentage of both clergy and laity observed new members feeling that they belong to their local congregations even though they have joined their churches under new membership requirements. The biblical support for the project is established through examining the Old Testament inclusions of 'sojourners' and New Testament concepts of discipleship, spiritual gifts, and loving others.  Psychological factors of assimilation are established through Abraham Mallows' hierarchy of needs.  Church models and secular models are examined also. Chapter four sets forth the actual components of the project: membership class, membership interview, fellowship ministry, and a sermon series on 'Keeping People.'  Chapter five reveals that the membership class and membership interview were the most effective components of the project. The use of the liturgical year as the operative framework allowed new members to be introduced to the basic worship life of the church.  The Revised Common Lectionary provided a biblical foundation which was compared and contrasted with Congregational principles as described in Arthur Rouner's The Congregational way of life.
