The project sought to motivate present church members to be intentional about including new members.  The Sunday worshipping congregation was included through presentation of related topics. Membership classes addressed strengths and differences between people of urban and rural backgrounds.  The church programming board created assisting strategies to integrate new members.  The report outlines biblical and theological bases for integrating newcomers, with sermon and class content suggestions. Prior work in this field has not taken into account the research that has been undertaken regarding employee commitment/satisfaction in the disciplines of organizational management.  The hypothesis tested in this product seeks to confirm, in the context of the local church, such research. A survey was developed to score degree of incorporation and assess the effectiveness of various programs through which new members could become incorporated.  Results were crosstabulated by gender, age, and scored degree of incorporation.  Analysis was done by comparing the results of members who joined by profession of faith, transferred from other United Methodist congregations, transferred from other denominations, and associate/affiliate membership. Content analysis was used to evaluate data gathered from interviews of six original members and twelve new members who joined after the merger.  Problems revolving around fears of anonymity and loss of intimacy affected the assimilation of original members. The making of new friends was important in deciding whether or not original members or new members remained active. Confrontations in newly formed groups inhibited the assimilation process. Factors impacting assimilation were determined.  A ministry was designed.  A group of sponsors was enlisted and trained.  A test of the ministry was conducted.  Evaluation of the ministry was performed by means of descriptive survey methodology, simple statistical analysis, and critical pastoral reflection.  New members who had been sponsored showed a statistically significant increase (p = less than .1) in assimilation for three of the seven indicators tested. They included retreats, meals, a photo directory, etc.  A questionnaire was used for evaluation. The procedure was to design a process to encourage more people to be active.  There was a survey of needs and a personal study of leadership that equips.  A small group Bible study was designed and taught to teach the priesthood of all believers, to help people discover spiritual gifts, and to learn personality type. Fifteen people participated in the Bible study. Awareness was increased.  An organizational system was designed for helping people begin to serve. A program was implemented that motivated new members to be involved in regular Bible study, exercising spiritual gifts, support of church finances, and personal witnessing.  Four cyclical classes, each addressing one of the areas noted and operating autonomously, were developed to provide the new member with immediate access to the assimilation process. Over 500 visitors pass through the church every year.  Most are seeking a new church.  In spite of this, attendance has remained flat for five years. Intentional involvement of new people should increase their chance of staying with the church.  Changes were made in purpose, vision, organization, and leadership. After one year, questionnaires were answered by those who stayed and left after attending for a while.
