This project proposes that this is a detrimental shift away from the church's mission of discipleship. The project seeks to investigate a healthy understanding of membership and explore how the church might faithfully engage new members of the church in a discipleship model of church life. The research was conducted with a participatory action research process by a group of representative members and non-members in a particular church. The project contains a literature review of the biblical foundation for church membership and the historical development of church membership, followed by two case studies. Church membership in America is declining, and many church leaders wrestle with the place of membership within their own organizations. Many church leaders overlook the role that a membership process can have in the development of disciples. The case studies included in this paper are two examples of churches that seek to use their membership process to enhance discipleship. These churches have a robust process that clearly communicates the expectations of the church with systems in place for accountability and follow-up. For the first stage of this project, the project director explored strategy planning and assimilation to increase his knowledge and skills in the respective fields of study. In the second stage, the project director assembled a planning team, devised the planning process, and then led the team to develop an assimilation strategy. Consultations with professors and church leaders both in India and in the US, the proposal, ethnography, and the reporting spanned twenty-six months. Twenty constituents including the youth who left, youth currently attending, parents, and pastors were interviewed along with questionnaires. The findings reveal that the youth left because these congregations have been lacking active ministries. This project focuses on the implementation of missional principles in a particular congregation to shift its narrative of decline to a narrative of revitalization. The report explores Second Presbyterian Church's historical identity leading to its period of decline, identifies missional principles, and then traces the narrative of the implementation of those principles within the congregation.
