A sermon series identifying what constitutes active church membership was presented to the congregation; a pretest-posttest opinionnaire was used to determine its effectiveness.  The author developed a model encourager program which included a membership committee and an eight-session encourager training course.  The effectiveness of the course was measured by the experimental method. If so, is it also possible for leadership style to have a positive effect on members' participation?  The purpose of this project is to determine the relationship between pastoral leadership style and church membership participation and to design a model of leadership style that can enhance membership participation.  The project affirmed that style can be a contributing factor to membership participation but there is not one style that will always enhance membership participation. The project director used an experimental method of research with an experimental and control group.  The director used eleven teaching sessions, eight doctrinal sermons, and a pre-test/post-test to accomplish the goal. While previous generations took religious affiliation for granted, the postwar generation shows significant differences with the preceding generations.  This fact became obvious when the postwar generation involvement with the church declined during their adolescence and early adulthood.  For this and other reasons, the postwar generation poses unique problems which an orientation must address. Control and experimental groups were selected and pretested.  The experimental group completed a spiritual gifts questionnaire, were given ministry opportunities, and both groups were posttested after twelve weeks.  Assimilation did occur in the areas of belonging, social interaction and positive perceptions about the church. The author theorized that an in-depth study of the historical, exegetical and theological bases for Christian baptism would foster attitudinal changes among members of this congregation toward accepting as members candidates who had been immersed as believers in non-Baptist churches.  Surveys taken prior to and following the study series indicated attitudinal changes which enhanced the possibility of a major policy change.
