The focus of attention will be on the Church of God which is the oldest, continuing Pentecostal denomination in the United States.  The premise of this thesis is that a theology of pastoral counseling is found within the Wesleyan tradition by which the Holiness and Pentecostal movements were shaped. The mission and work of evangelism in the historical Church of God in two different eras (1886-1928 and 1970-1989) is considered in relation to the elements of evangelism, doctrines, major church leadership, and hindrances to evangelism.  Implications of this research are drawn and stated, and a design for local Church of God evangelism is suggested.
